I’m not sure where to post this but I hope someone can help?
I’m trying to create a birthday hamper for a 12 year old who has recently been diagnosed as coeliac. She only got it confirmed 2 weeks ago and is taking it all in her stride but has been really poorly.
I’d like treaty things like cakes or doughnuts as she’s missing them, but I have no idea where to start Confused
Anyone have any suggestions? Especially online delivery I could get sent straight to her?
Thanks X

I think a lot of the readymade hampers contain things such as dark chocolate, truffles etc which i'm not sure a 12 year old would like, so you would be better making your own. tesco have lots of things, such as cupcakes, mini muffins, waffles, biscuits and chocolate spread, which you could put in a basket like this (which can be used again in her room). all the best x

Thank you. I thought about making my own I’m just not sure I’ll be able to get it to her on time. Oh well, if it’s nice enough I’m sure she’ll forgive us for being late lol X

DS (7) is gluten-free. Be wary of many of the 'free-from' chocolate / cake ranges because the supermarkets often kill two birds with one stone and make them dairy-free too, so they're pretty rank. I'd also take care with non-branded baked goods (i.e local bakery) as gluten-free isn't necessarily safe enough for a coeliac, you need to be 100% sure there's no risk of contamination - the bakery needs to be using separate utensils etc for their gluten-free range.

I'd stick to buying a few bits and putting together a little goody bag:

DS LOVES the Nairns gluten-free biscuits (you can buy them in most free-from aisles in the supermarkets). Cadbury's Giant Buttons are guaranteed to be gluten-free. Mr Kipling do a nice range of gluten-free things too (I've seen them in Tesco and Asda). Lidl do a lovely 'Just Free' chocolate brownie mix. Most supermarkets do a finest range of gluten-free cookies in a range of flavours. They're all really nice too.

If she likes baking, how about a gluten-free cookbook? We like the River Cottage one and BBC Good Food do a nice little one too.

Most supermarkets do but Tesco especially have an amazing gf free range.

Theimpossiblegirl · 29/05/2019 17:06

Macarons are often gluten free and you can get a huge range of flavours. Just check the label.
I've bought gluten-free ones from TK maxx and many supermarkets.

Marks and Spencer do a lovely GF range. Waitrose does the best bread I have tasted.

Expensive but so nice.

jollyohh · 29/05/2019 17:14

Waitrose do really nice chocolate muffins.

Ocado Love GF chocolate cake is nice too

GU chocolate mousse (not all) are GF and nice

Lots of chocolate is GF

A membership to coeliac uk would bed great gift. They have a food app checker where you scan the bar code and it will tell you if it's safe. That sort of thing is a life saver in the early days when you feel like your life is over! Stops you spending all your time in the 'special food aisle'

PersianStar · 29/05/2019 21:10

Thanks everyone. The cookbook is a fantastic idea, as is the membership and app.
I’m off Into town tomorrow so shall search the supermarkets
Thanks again for the help X

Have a look in Aldi, ours had Gluten free brownie mix and pizza bases with long dates on. Things a teen can make for themselves.
Our Asda also has a really good GF section. Better than the local Tesco.
I get Minstrals and jelly beans for myself as treats. Dd loves the GF Pretzels even though she's not GF. I love Mrs Crimbles coconut macaroons.

JohnWolfenstein · 29/05/2019 21:35

The m&s gf lemon cake is absolutely gorgeous. And you'd never be able to tell it was gf. Best gf cake I have tasted (in nearly 20 years of gf)

Some of the muffin type things can be a bit unpleasant in texture, so I would steer clear of them.

stucknoue · 29/05/2019 21:59

All the supermarkets have a free from ranges, some of the cakes etc are excellent and the baking mixes are a good idea for a girl of that age. Look on one of the parcel companies websites for maximum box dimensions (you print the label at home and the drop off points are usually newsagents and petrol stations). There's custom hamper companies but I don't think they would work well for a 12 year old.

Biscuiteers online have beautiful gf biscuit boxes.

Thornton's chocolates too are great obviously double check for no gluten
