I found this sandstone fossil in a shale bed at Runswick Bay, I have an idea of what it is, but if any more knowledgeable people can help, that would be amazing.

So here it is

@BickBock

I don’t see a footprint either. Perhaps it’s like looking a knots in wood and seeing a face!

LadyOfTheCanyon · 29/05/2019 05:24

Looks like an Aero to me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm a biologist
You may have the degree, but you're not one if you behave like Gollum with an interesting fossil that you're not quite sure what is and what to do with it.

A true colleague would seek expert advice about it and would want to make sure it's not relevant for science.
You're just a collector.

QuentinWinters · 29/05/2019 07:49

Dearie me. The OP is completely right that it's not THAT interesting. The whole reason God put fossils on earth is to be collected (Wink)
PS I was a paleontologist. The vast majority of my colleagues got into it from being fossil nerds and still collected in their spare time

Lweji · 29/05/2019 09:14

But is it actually a foot or footprint?

I think there's a contradiction between thinking that it's not that interesting but that an academic would keep it (because it would be sufficiently interesting?).
Asking an expert would result in either it not being of interest (no loss for the collector) or being of interest (loss for the collector but gain for science).

ILikeyourHairyHands · 29/05/2019 09:47

It's a footprint! It's a great and interesting thing but it's not a massive rarity or loss to science if I keep chipping away 'like Gollum'.

So, no harm done in asking someone who knows a bit more about it?

Lweji · 29/05/2019 09:52

How many footprints of the same dino have been found, and in what condition?

Sicario · 29/05/2019 09:54

This is extremely exciting. I like rocks very much. What do you use to chip away at it? Do you use one of those little drill things like they use in manicure salons?

Scion457 · 29/05/2019 11:32

That’s so cool!!

sosig · 29/05/2019 11:55

I never knew how exciting fossils were, thank you OP.Smile
