Asperger symptoms in women list - are they truly aspergers traits or something most people have/are?

Please have a read of the extensive list of symptoms.. I identify with about 90-95% of them yet just thought it was my personality (socially anxious, nerdy, a bit eccentric)... let me know if it's similar for you or whether you think having so many of these symptoms could very likely mean Aspergers? Especially interested to hear from those who have maintained lots of female friendships.

P.S I know no one should "diagnose" themselves with disorders simply from what's on the internet but just curious as to your thoughts.

A lot of that list is so vague or general that I'd imagine most people would fit it to some degree. It reminds me of a horoscope, actually!

Well I like Dr Who and hate war. I’m not psychic though. Seriously odd list.

Elllicam · 28/05/2019 21:23

And I also don’t think those symptoms mean Aspergers, I think they are far too vague. Also I don’t believe some of them are even real.

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 28/05/2019 21:24

I can relate to barely any of them.

Nolar · 28/05/2019 21:43

I have aspergers but that list is too contradictory in parts and has everything and the kitchen sink thrown at it for me to identify with lots of it. Also because it's so long and vague as a pp said it could be easy for people who don't have asd to identify with it or it resonating with people who have other things. Best thing would be to see a specialist, Ive seen ones recommended by mumsnetters that are good at adult female diagnosis, lorna wing I think it's called?

The Art of Autism has a far better list of traits that a female might present with, have you looked at theirs? Samantha Craft's Unofficial Checklist.

JanMeyer · 29/05/2019 00:17

I have Aspergers and think that list is ridiculous, I've seen it before and thought it absurdly vague and half of the stuff on there has absolutely nothing to do with autism. If you want to learn about how autism might present differently in women avoid anything written by Tania Marshall for a start. It's hard to take anyone seriously when they offer autism assessments via Skype.
It's even harder to take them seriously when they make absurd claims such as "current research shows people with autism don't have restricted interests, but rather a lifetime of interests that can vary." That's funny, since narrow and restricted interests are part of the diagnostic criteria.
Most of the stuff on that list is better described as personality traits rather than symptoms of anything.

That list looks like she's gone through every possible character trait and added it just in case-some contradicting each other.

Reminds me of the amniotic banding site which claimed amniotic banding was responsible for all possible congenital issues.

Tania is available for fee-based in-person or Skype remote assessments, consultations, problem-solving sessions, intervention, and support

Money making website.

Plus people on MN are always desperate to diagnose posters as having ASD.

AlunWynsKnee · 29/05/2019 00:31

And that's why people only trust an NHS diagnosis. It does sound like a horoscope and I couldn't read it all because it was annoying. Everyone has odd introvert traits. Not everyone has the triad of impairments that severely limit their ability to function in an NT world. Angry
ASD and mum of dd with ASD.

@TheNoodlesIncident I've had a look at the list you've mentioned and even that one seems fairly generic to me.. perhaps what I think is neurotypical isn't... or aspergers is such a mild disorders that it borders on the extreme end of neurotypical?

No, Aspergers is not a "mild disorder that borders on the extreme end of neurotypical."
For one thing that's not how the spectrum works. Only autistic people on the autistic spectrum, and people with Aspergers are autistic. It's not a spectrum that starts at NT and ends with severe autism.

People with Aspergers have difficulties in what's known as the triad of the impairments, this is what seperates people on the autistic spectrum (those with a diagnosis of autism, Aspergers or ASD) from neurotypicals. You should really do some proper reading about autism from a book or the actual DSM criteria if you're that interested, don't rely on lists of possible traits on the internet.

Do you have a reason for thinking you have Aspergers beyond being "socially anxious, nerdy, a bit eccentric" and reading a list on the internet? Because I assure you, there's a bit more to being autistic then just being a socially anxious eccentric. And there's nothing "mild" about Aspergers either. Angry
