I've never called my baby by his name!

Hes almost 5 months and I've never called him by his actual name. Always cheeky chops or poppet!
I've been told that by 6 months they should know their name but it's a struggle to say it as it's a very grown up name and he's much more of a poppet!

Do I need to start saying his name regularly?!

Why wouldn't you use his name? Confused

Shitsandgigglez · 28/05/2019 17:13

I think as he starts moving and you need to call him to come over to you or telling him off for sticking his fingers in plug socket/bashing his toys on tv screen/pulling books out of bookcase etc you'll find using his name more natural as poppet won't have the same ring to it Wink

CharleyFarleyy · 28/05/2019 17:13

I think you will just start to naturally say it, so like when they are a bit more mobile and you want to get their attention you don't shout "poppet" you shout "name" iyswim it's not something you need to worry about I don't think

Did you read all my post @SneakyGremlins ? 🙄

We called our DS "baby" for about the first 6 months. HV wasn't worried.
Does he turn round when you say "poppet"?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 28/05/2019 17:17

Does anyone call him by his full name? (Is it Jacob Reece Mogg?)

Shitsandgigglez · 28/05/2019 17:21

@SneakyGremlins it's perfectly normal not to call a small baby by their actual name when you're talking to them! Mine have all had cutesy (and rather ridiculous!) made up names as babies.

I never call my DH by his name either

Barbaraanne22 · 28/05/2019 17:22

If its so much of a grown up name for you to like for a child what is he going to called at nursery and primary school?

Disfordarkchocolate · 28/05/2019 17:23

I call one of mine 'sweet-cheeked angel face of loveliness' more than I do this real name (he's a teenager).

Firsttimemummy19 · 28/05/2019 17:24

@Barbaraanne22 Oh I don't know, are you suggesting I change if? This is clearly a bigger issue than I first realised! 🙄

Firsttimemummy19 · 28/05/2019 17:25

@Disfordarkchocolate Ha I love that nickname! I also call my baby something along the same lines

Puddingsmummy · 28/05/2019 17:26

@Shitsandgigglez my DH never gets called by his name, it's usually something far worse 😂

TinklyLittleLaugh · 28/05/2019 17:26

When DS2 started talking he called his older siblings by very strange names. DD1 was Eebabbo rather than Kate. We were baffled until we realised it was his baby pronunciation of their pet names: he must have genuinely thought DD1 was called Katie Badger. Grin

sirmione16 · 28/05/2019 17:30

Even when you're frustrated?! And don't say you've never been even slightly annoyed at him

EssentialHummus · 28/05/2019 17:32

DD only responded to Squidgy McGorgeous until she started walking. I quickly learnt that I wasn’t comfortable yelling that across Tesco.

Disfordarkchocolate · 28/05/2019 17:32

I need to change it soon and it makes me sad @Firsttimemummy19, his cheeks are getting too hairy and manly. I need something equally embarrassing so I can use the threat of me saying it in public.

Haworthia · 28/05/2019 17:33

I remember feeling unable to use my babies’ names when they were tiny. Their names just felt too big and grown up for them. It’s OK Grin

newjobnerves · 28/05/2019 17:34

It's really difficult, so we ended up changing DS's name officially to Little Fucker for ease.

Ginkypig · 28/05/2019 17:35

Chocolate Just change the sweet to hairy Grin

Tiredmum100 · 28/05/2019 17:38

Well mine were known as "trouble on legs" and "one sock" as 1 year olds. Luckily I'm not having to shout that across a park as they know their names. I wouldn't worry about it.

Byebyefriend · 28/05/2019 17:39

My friend’s son is 10 and still called by his nickname by everyone (it isn’t a name or shortened version)

Rickandportly · 28/05/2019 17:42

My son is 18 next year and I’ve only ever called him a variation of his tens of nicknames.

Rickandportly · 28/05/2019 17:43

One of them is Bubba and he banned that in public from the age of 8

Teenytinyvoice · 28/05/2019 17:44

My first baby thought she was called Birdy. She grew out of it Grin
