Grandparents birth certificates for passport

ImPermanentlyConfused · 28/05/2019 17:00

I'm applying for my 3 year old's first passport - only problem is, her dad isn't British, with a foreign passport.

When applying online, it says I need maternal and paternal grandparents birth certificates and marriage certificates.
Problem is my father is estranged, can't get his and my parents are divorced.
Paternal GPs - one passed away a while ago, no idea where her birth certificate is and also not sure where grandfather's one is! Even if I did, they're in another country.

How the heck do I get my daughter a passport without all this info? Or do I just need to suck it up and sort it out?

Thanks in advance

Do you have a passport yourself? If you do then you don't need any of that other stuff. It is to show her eligibility for British citizenship so if you have a passport and were born here then her citizenship is passed from you to her

There was another thread very like this and all they ended up needing was the child's birth certificate and the mother's passport details

I do, but mine is expired, does that matter? I'll be needing one anyway so might be for the best to get mine done first, then hers!

Same as previous posters. I just sent my BC and my passport number. My 3 year olds first passport is currently winging its way to us. They wanted all the grandparents stuff too. I just put a letter to say estranged and unable to get details.

I don't think it matters if it is expired.

Get yours renewed and then you don't need it

ImPermanentlyConfused · 28/05/2019 17:11

Thanks everyone, very helpful!

I think the online form defaults to say you need everything but you don't always.

Cheers dementedpixie, same situation, makes sense now!

You can order copies of certificates, but that will be difficult if some are overseas.

Best thing to do is sort your passport first and then sort your DD's passport as it will be easier to sort off yours.

dementedpixie · 28/05/2019 17:30

Your expired passport would still show that you were a British citizen at the time of her birth. Or renew yours first before doing hers. My renewal took 10 days a couple of months ago

It is really easy to get copies of UK certificates, you don't need to have the subjects' permission. It may vary for other countries, but should be easy to google.

RussianSpamBot · 28/05/2019 17:34

Just Fyi if your dad was born in the UK, you or anyone else who knows his date of birth and where he was registered can get a copy of his birth certificate. They're public documents. You don't need it now I dont think, but if you ever do then you don't need his permission. You could get a copy of mine if you knew my details, and I yours.

dementedpixie · 28/05/2019 17:36

OP doesn't need to order any certificates though. I do agree anyone can order them

I was renewing mine at the same time as I got the kids passports. I just put my passport number on and it was fine. It's to check British citizenship so as long as you can provide proof that at least one parent is a British citizen you are fine. Your passport is proof, even if it's expired.
