batch cooking and freezing food is a life saver. being able to pull out a shepards pie and stick it in the oven is amazing when i'm too tired to cook. all the best x

Fuck the fucking housework

Stillterrified · 28/05/2019 16:10

Most babies are super clingy, just go with it, buy and use a ring sling if you want to get things done - baby will fall asleep happily attached to you and you can feed on the go, eat a sandwich, or go for a coffee without any screaming.

Fuck the housework
Let them sleep on you
Tell anyone who says ‘you’re making a rod for your own back’ to fuck right off

Stillterrified · 28/05/2019 16:11

Oh also - next 2 me crib, the only way I have got any sleep the last few weeks

mbosnz · 28/05/2019 16:16

Leave the housework - unless living in a mess drives you nuts. But you and DH can BOTH do the dishes, put a wash on, shove some toilet cleaner down the dunny, or run the vac round.

Cut yourself an awful lot of slack. You just gave birth, not a walk in the park, even if you did have a peeled grape delivery, and now your hormones are all over the place, you're coming to grips with being a parent, both mentally, physically and emotionally, and your baby is coming to grips with being out the womb. Big adjustments for you all!

Remember you're all on the same side. Also remember that all your lives are different now. Both of you are parents, 24/7, with your first duty being to your babe, your second to the family unit. But try to enable each other to have some time 'off' if you can.

There is no one perfect way to parent a baby. You will find your way. Your way will be the best way for your baby. Perfect your 'smile and nod' for everyone who tries to tell you to do it their way.

Get a really good thermos cup. If you have an OH, het them to set you up with a hot drink in it, and a fresh sandwich in the fridge every morning.

Thank you everyone!!

Clean toilet, sink and kitchen sides.....the rest isn't worth bothering about.

Paper plates for first few weeks so it's less to wash up.

Batch cook and freeze meals to make life easier. Beans on toast is a good quick meal when baby sleeps. I had prepped salad in the fridge so I could feel a bit healthier. Cereal bars to keep me going through the night.

Get stock piles of baby and adult meds so you don't have to run out to shops if someone is poorly or teething. (Calpol, teething gel/crystals, nose spray, baby chest rub, baby albus oil, paracetamol for you)

Get a nose Frieda for when baby gets a cold (which seems to be every other week) they are totally gross but I swear have saved my DD from a chest infection many a time.

Baby box down stairs full with nappies, wipes, cream, bibs and other essentials so your not running upstairs every 5 mins.

If your bottle feeding get extra bottles so you only have to wash and sterilise once a day. Same with dummies, get a few because they get lost, dropped or let water in and have to be thrown.

Get milk delivered by a milk man if u have one. It's a bit more expensive but loads nicer and I don't have to worry about having enough milk.

Have a travel cot in your tiny room if you have space, use it as a play pen so you can go the loo or have a HOT cup of tea....hot tea is a treat when you have a baby.

Enjoy those first few weeks of being a new mum, don't expect too much of yourself. Let the world disappear for a while and enjoy your lovely new baby. Everyone always tried to get me out the house, it's good to get out but it's also good to enjoy cuddles on the sofa :)

Don't listen to anyone who uses the line 'oh your making a rod for your own back' it's all bollox. Do what feels right for you! Xoxo

TwinkleMerrick · 28/05/2019 22:38

Sorry that should of said FRONT room, not tiny room.....although my front room is Tiny :)

Mrscog · 29/05/2019 12:10

Only go to groups if you actually enjoy them. I spent way too much time hating them when I’d have been just as happy pushing my baby around a park on my own.

TheClitterati · 29/05/2019 15:02

don't buy anything or do anything because you think you "should".

parenting a young baby has been overly commercialised and fetishised (not a word!!) and none if it matters like companies want you to think it does.

MummyMCM · 29/05/2019 15:48

@Faster ^^^ THIS

KTD27 · 29/05/2019 15:50

Three words
Lower your standards
Oh and another
Enjoy (when you can)

Napssavelives · 29/05/2019 17:14

Get a cleaner
Online food shopping
Lower your standards - If you get to the end of the day and everyone is still alive that’s enough

Southlonmum · 29/05/2019 22:21

Enjoy it, let yourself only look after the baby as far as possible. If you get one other thing done a day, great - if not, don't sweat it. It goes by so fast.

jackio2205 · 29/05/2019 22:36

Im super practical, but what helped me was thinking where i want to get to and then starting as i mean to go on. For example, i had a wedding to go to and had to stay overnight where no kids were allowed, so from early doors i made the routines as simple as can be so anyone could pick them up in my absence, and i wasnt clingy with baby and let her stay at my mums, by the time the wedding come, my mum had done the routine and baby slept lovely at hers, none of us were nervous etc about it
Good luck!

redbedheadd · 29/05/2019 22:41

Do a little something for you each day, even if it's 10 minutes.

Sounds weird but when my DS was a few weeks old I got into a routine before bed where I cleansed, toned and put a nice cream on. I never did this before baby was born! It took me less than 5 mins but it really gave me a boost about myself when I was feeling sore, fat and tired. As he has got older I can have an hour for yoga or just to wander round the block. Just a couple mins for yourself can go a long way, nothing prepares you for how intense it is!!!

JumpingFrogs · 29/05/2019 22:41

Remember that whatever parenting challenge you are facing (colic, sleepless nights, potty training, food tantrums, right up to teenage issues) it is just a phases and your child will grow out of it.

Harriedharriet · 30/05/2019 03:47

My 1st is now 12. If I could go back I would slow down, now be wound up by the "wisdom" of others and I would allow both myself and baby plenty of time to learn and grow.
And yes, remember, just as you have it ACED - they change completely! :):) Enjoy it.

Scion457 · 30/05/2019 07:15

Batch buy birthday cards. I do 6 months at a time, I hate constantly having to pop to the shop for birthday cards and we’ve got a large extended family.

Get a little basket by your front door. I put a concealer, hairbrush, lipstick and perfume in it for me. I always feel somewhat presentable as I’m leaving the house. Also, hats, gloves, scarfs in the winter and sun hat, glasses and suncream in the summer. No faffing about wasting time looking for stuff.
