Jackfruit

Just tried a 'BBQ Smoked Jackfruit' ready meal which was in the yellow sticker corner of my local supermarket!

Never even heard of Jackfruit before, but hey, feeling adventurous...!

Goodness me, I wanted to taste something new, not feel like I'd chucked a bottle of extra hot BBQ sauce down my throat! I couldn't taste anything else!!

So, what does Jackfruit taste like and is it worth buying 'properly' to cook with? Saying that, I don't think I've ever seen it in the shops before (I'm in the UK). I've done the whole google thing but am still none the wiser!

SriLankan curry made with jackfruit. Bloody wonderful!

Has it not been around for years as a vegan 'trend'? I guess it's finally filtered into supermarkets! It basically is flavourless but absorbs flavours well and it's all about the texture. I only really use it to replicate pulled pork as a vegan option and it's fairly nice, nothing earth shattering but good if you're vegan or meat free or have a guest who is.

Have always bought mine in the Chinese supermarket- tinned in various concoctions. Best shop ever!

We bought a tin of it recently, opened it, were horrified at how much like tuna it looked, tasted a tiny bit each and binned the rest. Horrible texture. It might have been OK in something that would flavour it a bit, but as vegetarians for 30-odd years we couldn't cope with the meaty texture of it.
