tax credits overpayment

I have received a letter from tax credits saying I have been overpaid £600 for year ending 2018 and I have a month to repay it. I rang them first thing this morning after not sleeping a wink to dispute it and they are adamant I owe it

The circumstances are thus: I was a sahm for many years but eventually needed to go back to work. After applying for dozens of job I was over the moon to get a temp job for 6 months as I thought it would be good for experience, references etc. DEF temp as it was to cover a particular project.

I notified tax credits of the 6 months salary and I continued to get some tax credits albeit a reduced rate.
After the six months I got another contract unexpectantly as they were impressed with my performance etc etc so I notified Tax credits and my benefits ceased.

Their argument is that the extra six months pay took me over the threshold and therefore I shouldn't have had any TC at all. My argument is that my estimated salary for the first 6 months of the job was under threshold- I had no indication I would get another contract as my employer was adamant it WAS only for 6 months

not sure what to do next- I don't have much spare at the end of the month and certainly not £600. Can anyone advise please?

They will usually allow for a payment plan, can you ask them about that?

Sorry I have no idea about their thresholds etc. I am glad I don’t claim tax credits anymore because no matter how many times you call them and let them know about changes they still manage to overpay you and then demand their money back!!

Hi, we're moving this thread over to our Chat topic at the OP's request.

I would also ask for a payment plan.

We have usually just paid it back through the next award, but if you no longer have an award with them then they'll ask for it back.
just ask them for a payment plan as you can't afford to do it all at once. Maybe offer £100 per month, or £50 if that's not doable.

I was overpaid £3000. I have a payment plan of £15 a month. My son will be 30 I think before I pay it off.

I was overpaid £6,000 and I pay back £60.00 a month until 2021 that’s when I will be finished paying back.

It makes my blood boil. So many over payments with this benefit. I remember how stressed and upset it made me as a newly single mum.

thanks everyone- managed to speak to someone eventually- she was very kind which made me cry as i wasn't expecting that. They have agreed for me to pay it back £10 a month which is doable
