Scandi style - we don't have design furniture galore (lighthearted)

Inspired by a thread about kids clothing Scandi style.
I was just wondering if anybody knows how Scandinavians live in real life?

Do you think that we all live as shown in magazines or what do you think is specific to our ways? Btw I'm Danish 😀.

Can someone explain the point of rugs under dining tables to me? I had to live with one once. It was a dust, crumb and spilled food magnet and was always rumpling up underneath the chairs and table. For the same reason it was also a nightmare to vacuum. I can just about understand that if you had carpet then a rug might seem easier to clean as you can put it through the washing machine, but if you have lovely easy-to-clean wooden floors then why??

EssentialHummus · 28/05/2019 16:34

Are your (collective) dressed in wall to wall patterns, stripes and motifs?

EssentialHummus · 28/05/2019 16:34

Collective DC, that is?

ladame, never given it a thought. But you have these (firm not washable) ones under your table to protect your nice wooden floors from indentations made from the chair legs. Also to mark the dining area. Those are my best guesses.

essential have a look at h&m Danish website for kids, that should give you an idea.

Danes in general tend to dress in dark colours (less in Summer), but everybody wears black and dark blue. You have much more floral prints than we do, I think.

Just throwing this in the mix, but I'm from Portugal and don't know a single person there who has colour on their walls or carpets.
It's all white / wooden floors/ tiles or marble.

We're also very partial to plain neutral colours for clothing.

I do find most British homes visually "noisy", but admire the quirkiness.

Ticklingcheese · 28/05/2019 17:33

espresso same here 😀. Haven't been to Portugal, but where I've been in Spain, they had darker colours indoor even red.

What I think differs a lot comparing uk to what I know 😏, is the very small living rooms, don't get that or is what I have seen old fashioned?

Tickling thank you. To follow up: are brands like Smafolk and Polarn O Pyret household names there? Known at all? Who buys them? I sometimes feel like Scandi children’s clothing is a bit of an English swindle.

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 28/05/2019 17:52

My two best friends are Danish (and a trained designer) and Norwegian respectively and they have very very different styles. Lots of emphasis on quality, longevity and comfort for both of them though. Both use a lot of natural materials, a limited colour palette and love to buy things that are handmade. My Danish friend however is very minimalistic and her house has a very pared back vibe, whereas the Norwegian's home is cosier, more eclectic and a little more 'old fashioned' I guess.

Scion457 · 28/05/2019 17:59

I love skandi style, slowly incorporating it. I just find it a really calm, soothing vibe. Any links to inspiration?

BollocksToBrexit · 28/05/2019 18:03

Polarn and Pyret is well known. There's a shop in our main town. Never heard of Smafolk. I get a lot of DS's clothing from Villervalla as we also have one of their shops.

Ticklingcheese · 28/05/2019 18:16

essential don't have dcs that age anymore, so not up to date. But polar o pyret, I have heard of (Swedish i think), småfolk too. The thing is those with a lot of money and those with design interest, design dcs buy this. My impression is that a lot of people still buy everyday kids clothes at h&m, bigger supermarked stores etc. But as in the uk more and more people spend huge on design for kids.

surf 😁 there is a big difference in designers, we have tv shows where they redesign people's homes. Especially one designer throws out 3/4 of people's possessions every single time (not pretty, not personal just bare) 😁. But I think more Danes live minimalistic compared to brits - perhaps, I think, could be 😂.

Where can we get scandi style here in the UK, not counting IKEA?

Ninkaninus · 28/05/2019 18:21

A lot of homes in the UK wouldn’t look good with typical Scandi decor. Houses are tiny and rooms are boxy and the windows are small so you get a very dingy light.

Ticklingcheese · 28/05/2019 18:26

scion design super expensive but great for inspiration:
PH lamps
Arne Jacobsen furniture

Accessories i love Greengate the older editions.

Mix things with ikea items in light coloured wood, whites and Grey. Mix some ice glas ware and a h... of a lot of candles 😁.

Will try to post pics of what I like later if you are interested.

Hasn’t Scandi style been done to death now?

Ninkaninus · 28/05/2019 18:36

I’ve always loved danish design and the mid century modern aesthetic.

But then I am danish, so it’s just a part of who I am. My whole young life I spent surrounded by classic danish furniture and lighting designs.

It’s as authentic to me as the concept of hygge is, and I will love it still when current trends change.

Dancingandthedreaming · 28/05/2019 18:43

Ooh, me, I'm half Danish and get lots of inspiration from Danish family houses. They are all quite arty so there's lots of inspiration. Yes to white walls, natural/whitewashed wooden floors, fabulous modern lighting (I love Norm), amazing modern art, lots of hygge touches like candles (only white), fluffy rugs on floors, snuggly on sofas. I think the biggest noticeable difference is at Christmas when all my friends get their tinsel and coloured lights out and I have to be very very polite indeed, having a gorgeous natural tree with nisse men and white lights and wooden decorations. Smug, moi?

Ticklingcheese · 28/05/2019 19:31

Hi ninka you were on another of my threads, hurry book a visit to dk 😁. but you are right we have massive windows and large rooms.

Dancing not smug at all, you just know the right way 🤣.

Well here are some accessories, you can ask for designers if anything catches your eye. Not Scandi stile, but my stile or lack off 😂

I'd really appreciate any pics please, for inspiration.

Ticklingcheese · 28/05/2019 21:33

ssd
Some links here, can't post some of my more interesting pics as mentioned.

I have found some links for inspiration, the trick is to find something similar (less costly) that is more personalized.

In general I think Danish style is something in the line of
White walls everywhere, that way we can change colour on accessories - blue, creme white, green

Lots of natural light

The smaller the room, the less furniture.

Candles
Tea candles in nice little glasses (when we bought desserts from aldi we used to save the glasses for candles)

Wooden floors with rugs here and there, to your liking, e.g. if you have a sofa and 2 chairs, you put the sofa against a wall, a rug in front, coffee table on it and the chairs on the other side facing the sofa

Big Green bottles 5-10 liters for decoration are lovely

Don't overcrowd with to many things on display, try putting 10 things on display, then remove 7, the best 3 left will be much more noticeable 😀.

Sheep skins loove them, black, white, grey_

Anything white Hemnes from ikea.

So sorry this is long, my taste, my opinion. Hope this is of use 😀.
