Hydraulic storage beds

Does anyone have one?

I really want one but don't have a big budget. My local trustworthy independent shop only sells one version which is really expensive as they say the rest break too easily, so I was wondering if anyone had had one for a while and it was ok?

Both my children have a single ottoman storage bed and we got this one

Had to buy the headboard separately but from the same company. My children are teens and have had them for almost 2 years. They are side lift ones. They feel fairly sturdy, Ds1 is 16 and weighs 10 stone.

The mattresses we bought were also good quality from the same shop. Their beds are comfier than my own which was custom made for us but from a bed factory so cheap.

That's great, thanks! My mattress is fine, it's just the base in after but didn't want to waste my money.

Yes I have a Tempur one.

It's fantastic but SO heavy, would probably be less heavy with a normal mattress. 12 years old and still good as new.

Tempur is waaaaaaaay out of my price range. I'm looking at more like £200...

I’ve got a Bensons for Beds storage bed. We looked at several and like you say, some of the lifting mechanisms felt like they wouldn’t last long.

Ours is very substantial and the storage volume is massive! It was pricey but I guess you get what you pay for.

Qweenbee · 28/05/2019 08:53

Be so very careful. I know someone who was severely injured by it collapsing on them.

LadySybilPussPolham · 28/05/2019 09:35

I’m not sure that this is the sort of thing you can economise on too much. I bought a single (£200) and king (£549) recently from Dreams and they seem sturdy enough. I paid a bit extra to have them assembled, which was reassuring. Interest free credit for 20 months.

While researching I looked at some super-cheap ones through Groupon but the reviews were appalling. You would not want to risk a king size bed collapsing on you while you’re rummaging in the base!

IWouldPreferNotTo · 28/05/2019 09:43

Are you in London? I'm selling mine at the moment. Double bed, headboard and easy to lift. The only downside is it's not easy to transport, would need a van

LoafofSellotape · 28/05/2019 10:55

My bed has a safety bar at the side,no way would I have one without!

ExpletiveDelighted · 28/05/2019 11:09

Ours was quite expensive, kingsize made of two narrow single compartments clipped together and a kingsize lid and mattress. It has 4 lifters (one each side of each compartment) its very easy to lift. Had it for several years and very pleased with it.

FunnyHappyGirl · 28/05/2019 11:18

We got one about 6 years ago and are about to replace it with a standard divan. We bought an expensive mattress and a cheap base. The mechanism is still fine but the bits that attach the slats to the base have all broken and the slats keep moving under the mattress. I have another (more expensive) metal bed frame bed with wooden slats underneath which is almost 20 years old and is in perfect condition still. You may get a bargain, but be careful that sometimes you get what you pay for.

Kedgeree · 28/05/2019 11:21

We've got one for the spare room. Standard double bed size. Got it from Bensons I think but couldn't swear to that. I got the best quality mattress so it is quite heavy, but the mechanism works well and there's loads of space. I'm going to go for a king size one when we replace our bed soon.

whoami24601 · 28/05/2019 11:41

We've got one that we got when we got married 11 years ago. It's been dismantled and rebuilt several times in house moves so is in slightly worse condition than it otherwise could be. Though saying that it's still v sturdy! I love it! The storage underneath is massive (brilliant for Christmas presents!) and never had a problem. I think my mum paid £200 for a double from an independent bed shop

ChesterDrawsDoesntExist · 28/05/2019 11:45

I have a mid-priced one and it's over a year old now and no problems. I really like it.
DS has a very cheap one (double) and it's doing fine too although 8yo DD's visiting friends used it as a trampoline (even after they were told repeatedly by DD and me to stop) and broke a slat. (Honestly, who are raising these horrors?!)
My only worry is that as it's a fabric bottom and will be very heavy full of stuff so needs emptied first, when am I actually going to move it to clean underneath? I dread to think what it looks like under there after a year on laminate flooring.

I think my next bed will be off the floor with rolling storage drawers rolled underneath like I used to have. Easy to move and easy to clean.

ElephantsEatEggs · 29/05/2019 06:55

The one I linked came assembled, so just had ties holding it together. It has a wooden base and does feel very sturdy. They delivered them into the rooms so up the stairs and into the bedrooms. We just had to put the feet on.

We do know someone who got their arm trapped in theirs, it was an end lift style and he couldn't get his arm out, had to ring for help to release him and he has some nerve damage to his upper arm. I will try to find out which make it was.

Having said that I know lots of people who have them and never had any issues.

Magmatic80 · 29/05/2019 07:02

We’ve got one, it was our bed for first 4 years, it’s moved house twice and now it’s in spare room. Keep Christmas decs, and random stuff that might otherwise be in attic under it, so only gets opened maybe every two months. It works fine still. Was cheap one from amazon, just a double.v useful!

Magmatic80 · 29/05/2019 07:03

Sorry, we’ve had it 7 years

TwattingDog · 29/05/2019 07:15

We have a cheap generic brand. Side lift. King size. No issues.

A lot of the problems come down to the fact you have to build it yourself including the hydraulic struts. Build it badly, it will collapse on arms etc.

We got rid of a foot opening one as the side opening version is lighter when lifting up and easier to move. It's also more effective for accessing the storage.

photogirl89 · 29/05/2019 09:31

We got ours from dreams. About £300 but I think there was a cheaper option too.
Well worth it, you can get loads in it!

BogglesGoggles · 29/05/2019 10:02

I got a cheap one from furniture123 (275 for a king). It doesn’t exactly inspire confidence but so long as you aren’t jumping on it it’s fine and very attractive.

LBOCS2 · 29/05/2019 10:10

We had a cheap one and it was rubbish. No accidents or collapsing but it definitely wouldn't have come apart and gone together again, and generally felt very flimsy. I don't think it's a good idea to economise too much on them.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 29/05/2019 10:12

I've got a cheap one and It's fine. I'm no lightweight and am getting stuff in and out of it frequently.
