marriage is more beneficial to men than women

Read an article on this based on research. Men who are married live longer than single men, tend to be richer..better health etc. Women tend not to get the same benefits from marriage.

Single women with no kids...higher earners than married women, happier and better health.

I think I probably agree.

Women get financial protection from marriage.

Isn't the crux of it that having kids disadvantages women to a far greater extent than men? Marriage offers some legal protection to ameliorate the hit in earning potential and freedom. I'd also comment that there is sometimes a bloody good reason why men remain unmarried which may impact on how successful other areas of their life are!

What's the comparison between women with children, married, cohabiting, divorced, separated?

People without DC tend to be better off, but are they really happier? How is it decided ? Not having children when you want them is not a recipe for happiness. How is that allowed for in the headline stats?

Yes, childbirth alters a number of health issues, possibly permanently. Many people think it's still worth it

So if you do have DC, better in this survey to marry or not? (Can you link it?)

And given the very different material circumstances after relationship breakdown, is it 'better' for women to have been married or not?

I remember learning in sociology A'level 30+ years ago, that married men were the happiest sector of society and that married women were the most unhappy.
You would have hoped that with greater equality comes greater happiness. It seems there is still a long way to go.

Babysharkah But women wouldn’t need financial protection if they didn’t bear children - it’s the impact that this has on the earning potential of women , the likelihood that they will become the primary careers and give up work / go part time that means that they need to be protected from their men leaving them destitute. A single woman with no kids wouldn’t need this protection.

Actually I think that women who earn risk losing their assets in marriage these days.
Women who don’t earn can wind up trapped.
I was single a long time and was lonely at times.
I would not be without my DC for anything but I soon learned that marriage is designed to suit and support men.

Women get financial protection from marriage

Only if they are the lower earner and/or have children. Doesn't apply to all women. Also not all women want DC and are perfectly happy without them.

Actually...“Married people are happier than other population subgroups, but only when their spouse is in the room when they’re asked how happy they are. When the spouse is not present: fucking miserable,” he said.”

What is the actual research in which the Guardian article was based?

"We do have some good longitudinal data following the same people over time, but I am going to do a massive disservice to that science and just say: if you’re a man, you should probably get married; if you’re a woman, don’t bother.”

What is the nature of that disservice? And where is the longitudinal published?

Langrish · 28/05/2019 09:44

Marriage has been beneficial for both of us. Depends entirely on the circumstances in every individual relationship.

NailsNeedDoing · 28/05/2019 09:47

Surely there's got to be far too many variables for it to be as simple as married v unmarried men.

I need my experience it's the other way round. The benefits to the woman far outweigh those to the man, especially after divorce.
