Help, suddenly unwashable hair!

I have fairly thick hair and washing it has thus far been uneventful although I do need to use a fairly cleansing shampoo and nothing too heavy conditioner wise or it's left kind of sticky

I wash it every couple of days and always have, but in the last few months I can't seem to clean it! After washing it, it stays sort of sticky and looks greasy. I've tried three different brands, all the same!

Is it the water? My technique? what's changed? It feels like something to do with the washing rather than my hair itself like hormones

Do you shampoo twice? What are you using on it?

Newmumma83 · 28/05/2019 07:59

Try using conditioner then shampoo ... sounds odd but can work x x

SmellMySmellbow · 28/05/2019 08:00

Shampoo twice. Use silicone free shampoo. Do a apple cider vinegar rinse instead of conditioner once a week to get rid of any build up.

Sometimes I switch to a cheap brand Alberto basalm for a few weeks that helps me x

Give it a wash once a month with washing up liquid then follow with a good conditioner. Washing up liquid gives hair a lovely deep clean and removes all traces of product that can build up. Serums are terrible for causing build up.

@DesperadoDan Yes to washing up liquid for a thorough cleanse.

Head and shoulders or a decent clarifying shampoo - really get hair totally wet - put shampoo on and leave on for 5/10 minutes preferably with a shower cap on. Rinse and then just normal shampoo. Totally agree a ACV rinse regularly avoids build up

CitadelsofScience · 28/05/2019 08:25

Using a clarifying shampoo helps mine when it's full of build up. I think herbal essences do one and body shop, they're the ones I've used.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 28/05/2019 08:27

Aussie Mega, it gets rid of the "buildup" of silicon (plastic) that you find in standard shampoos and conditioners

Really makes a difference

kaytee87 · 28/05/2019 08:36

Use the herbal essences 0 range. Give your hair a really good brush before you go in the shower. Use hot water. Shampoo twice and only condition the ends.

PawPawNoodle · 28/05/2019 09:14

This happens to me when I use the same shampoo/conditioner for too long, it's like my hair gets used to it. I usually have a few different types on the go that do different things to mix it up.

MimiRose01 · 28/05/2019 09:15

My hair is thick too and I had the same problem! I started using head and shoulders, the pink one (smooth and silky) It has made such a huge difference! If I shampoo twice it also really helps.

JangoInTheFamilyWay · 28/05/2019 10:16

I've had this, after fairy liquid failed I washed it in conditioner a few times (in the same shower) and it was fine (you could also use olive oil, coconut etc), I then did a final shampoo. I now have a big bottle of v cheap conditioner and use conditioner first about once a month. A good general rule of thumb is that if soap doesn't dissolve something, oil probably will.

hmmshallwe · 28/05/2019 14:05

Thanks, will give this a try!

I don't understand where the build up has come from as I don't really use products 🤔 but agree that's what it seems like.

It's been while since I had it coloured (semi and highlights) but if anything it's normally dryer in between dyes
