On-line passport application

IamAporcupine · 28/05/2019 00:17

Does anybody know - if I apply for my son's first UK passport on-line how long do I have to send them the additional documents?
I cannot find any information.
Should it be done immediately or can I take some time until I collect everything?
I've only just realised I will need additional documentation so I am not sure whether I should postpone the application or not.

Also, does anybody know if there is a help line/email?

Thanks!

How long will you need to collect the documents?

When I applied for DD's they only asked for the documents after they were satisfied with the contents of the form and her photos had been countersigned. The timing of that will depend on how quickly the signatory responds to the email but DD's was about 10 days.

You have to wait for them to contact you to let you know which documents you need and also where to send them. (The address will contain a reference number for the application, so you can't do it before then).

Once the request for the documents came through, I received a reminder after about 4 days but no deadline was given. So that was at least a couple of weeks after the initial online application.

Thanks a lot GinUp

I might not take long to collect everything actually, but we need to travel abroad in two weeks so I would not be able to send his other passport until then.

So they tell you which documents you should send? That's another issue with our application as I am not sure exactly what they will request (I am an EEA citizen)

ps - how long did the passport take to arrive?

If you sign up for updates by text and/or email when you apply, they are very good at letting you know how it's all progressing.

Looking back at my texts, I applied on 22nd April. DD's photo was confirmed a week later, and the document request was sent the same day.

It took a few days before I could get to the post office and so they received my documents on 3rd May. The passport arrived on 8th May.

So even with my few days delay and it taking a few more days for the photos to be confirmed as being of DD, it still only took about 2 weeks.

They tell you which documents you will need in the email they send you.

That's really helpful, thanks!

@GinUp - can I ask you something else?
Are you British?
Did you have to send any additional documents?
Thanks for your help

GinUp · 11/06/2019 17:15

Yes I'm British.

The only document they asked for was DD's full birth certificate.

dementedpixie · 11/06/2019 17:24

What are the details regarding you and your dh? Is one of you a British citizen? When were you/him born? The extra documents are to prove the right to British citizenship.

IamAporcupine · 11/06/2019 18:04

Thank you both

I called the helpline today and it seems that the only document needed is his birth certificate.

Some rule must have changed recently as I was expecting to be asked for additional documentation Confused

Do you have a British passport? That means you pass on your British citizenship through that. You therefore only need the birth certificate. And a countersignstory person to validate the photos

dementedpixie · 11/06/2019 18:09

Why did you think you needed other documents?

IamAporcupine · 11/06/2019 18:15

Yes I do have a British passport now, but not when my son was born.

The requirement always was that for your child to have British nationality you had to show that you were "settled" at the time of their birth.
So I was expecting to Beverly asked for documentation to prove that

Is the father British?

www.gov.uk/check-british-citizenship/born-in-the-uk-on-30-april-2006-onwards does this help at all?

IamAporcupine · 11/06/2019 19:13

Beverly? Confused

Is the father British?
Same as me - he is now, but he was not then

www.gov.uk/check-british-citizenship/born-in-the-uk-on-30-april-2006-onwards does this help at all?
I've read those pages loads of times, and it is still not clear...

Anyway, I think I'll do what the Home Office man on the phone said today, and I will just send the birth certificate!

Would this have applied:

Permanent residence status

Your parent will usually have got permanent residence status automatically if both the following apply:

they were from an EU or EEA country

they lived in the UK for 5 years and were working, studying, self-sufficient or looking for work here

Your parent does not need to have applied for a permanent residence document to have permanent residence status. Find outmore about permanent residence status.

IamAporcupine · 11/06/2019 19:34

Yep exactly, that's our situation
But what I mean is that until very recently you had to prove that you lived in the UK for 5 years and were working, studying, self-sufficient or looking for work here

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 11/06/2019 19:39

So it's just the fact they aren't asking for proof? Get the application in before they change their mind Wink

dementedpixie · 11/06/2019 19:41

Or did you have to provide that info for your passport?

cheeseandcrackers · 11/06/2019 19:44

Pretty sure my passport application said if you don't supply docs within 8 weeks, they cancel the application and you forfeit the fee

IamAporcupine · 11/06/2019 20:33

@dementedpixie - that's exactly what I am thinking!
I am off to the post office tomorrow!

@cheeseandcrackers - thanks that was my original question, but it looks like I will not have to send many documents, so there will be no delays.
