Do you say either like eye-ther or ee-ther

And is neither nigh-ther or knee-ther?

I’m eye-ther and nigh-ther.

Jeez it’s been a long day...

I interchange between both. I say scon and scone too....

EleanorOalike · 27/05/2019 21:39

North-west here I say both to rhyme with eye. Never ee.

Mominatrix · 27/05/2019 21:41

Neyether, eyether

American

kaytee87 · 27/05/2019 21:52

Neether eether

Scottish

hairypaws · 27/05/2019 21:54

Eye-ther
Knee-ther
This is weird isn't it, surely whichever one I pick it would be the same for both 🤷‍♀️

Scottish

Shopgirl1 · 27/05/2019 21:57

I use them all, no idea in which circumstances I favour one pronunciation over the over.

Ohyesiam · 27/05/2019 21:59

I’m not sure. And now that I e spent a few minutes saying both words both ways, they don’t even sound like words.

evilharpy · 27/05/2019 22:00

Neeether, eeeeether. Irish living in SW England.

AltogetherAndrews · 27/05/2019 22:04

Scottish, and I pronounce them differently

Knee-ther
Eyether

Don’t know why they don’t rhyme

kaytee87 · 27/05/2019 22:05

Actually I think I say eyether and neether....

Now im confused Grin

floraloctopus · 27/05/2019 22:06

Eye-ther and nigh-ther

GlitterPixie · 27/05/2019 22:08

eether and neether

TheNoodlesIncident · 27/05/2019 22:09

I say them the same as hairypaws and AltogetherAndrews - am also Scottish

I was startled when English DS said them differently from me, I expect he's repeating how his teachers pronounce them

DramaAlpaca · 27/05/2019 22:11

I use ee-ther & eye-ther interchangeably, but it's always nigh-ther.

VanillaLatteAndCake · 27/05/2019 22:12

All of the above! I can't think of any other words I do this with...how strange!!

RaptorWhiskers · 27/05/2019 22:14

Eeether and neeether.

How do you say “again”? I say it to rhyme with “hen” but DS has a rhyming book where it’s clearly meant to be said to rhyme with “pain”. And he also has a book that rhymes “lion” with “iron”!

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 27/05/2019 22:14

Another Scot who says nee-ther and eye-there

HelpAFattieOutHere · 27/05/2019 22:19

I think I vary, and I think it's to do with whether or not the subject begins with a vowel or not.

I think I'd say "I'd like eee-ther bananas or pears" but "I'd like eye-ther apples or pears". Same with neither.

As a standalone word e.g. in response to a question, I'd probably lean towards eye-ther and nee-ther but I think that varies too!

evilharpy · 27/05/2019 22:33

Again to rhyme with hen.
