Strange question on application form

Hi all, dd is applying for a job with Max Spielman in our local Asda.

One question we are struggling with "if you had a £100 bonus what would you spent the money on"

Please advise us! Many thanks.

Well what would she spend it on? A treat of some sort, presumably. Clothes, make up, a meal out with friends?

Soola · 27/05/2019 16:45

Save half and give quarter to parents (lol) as a thank you and quarter on clothes/toiletries.

RapscallionKat · 27/05/2019 16:46

How is that any of their business?!

I'd be tempted to say crack cocain.

I'd probably say I would save a third. Put a third towards living expenses and treat myself with the last third.

In reality I would get my nails done and go out for a fancy lunch 😁

SleepingStandingUp · 27/05/2019 16:47

Maybe they are trying to get a bit of personality and interests out of them

SneakyGremlins · 27/05/2019 16:49

Why do they need to know Confused it reads like they'll only give a bonus if they feel what it would be spent on is acceptable Hmm

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 27/05/2019 16:49

It's probably one of those questions which is equivalent to "if you were a biscuit, what sort of biscuit would you be?" ie total nonsense which some idiot thinks will cause you to bare the inside of your soul.

That said, I'd probably say I'd put half into my savings pot and put the other half towards my hobby / new clothes / a night out so you can simultaneously be seen to be sensible and to have a life outside of work.

dalmatianmad · 27/05/2019 17:10

Thanks everyone, I wondered if they were looking for someone that was willing to spend a bonus on say photography stuff??
Feels like a trick question to me?

She would blow it on clothes and make up!

Possibly a question to ensure the applicant has really read the form ?

When I've worked with market research organisations, they all have little tricks to ensure their data is as "clean" as possible. So you get odd questions, and subtly repeated questions.

NetballHoop · 27/05/2019 17:40

I'd just reply "Buying things"

dalmatianmad · 27/05/2019 18:27

Thanks all

Some treats from Asda?

Lobsterquadrille2 · 27/05/2019 19:07

Is it a handwritten or on line application form?

dalmatianmad · 27/05/2019 19:23

Its Handwritten Lobster, it's like an application form from the 80's Grin

I once had an application form for KPMG overseas with some very odd questions. One was "which law would you change and why?". It was handwritten. The recruitment partner later said that the questions were purely to assess legibility of handwriting, spelling and grammar, use of apostrophes etc, so they wanted detailed answers. They didn't care what the content was. And I am an accountant so it wasn't specifically relevant - that's why I asked; I wonder if it's a similar reason.

Diemme · 27/05/2019 20:25

I don't think it's a trick question. They're just interested in seeing how she communicates and can talk about herself.

slipperywhensparticus · 27/05/2019 21:05

I was asked this once apparently if you said towards a holiday you got pushed down the list as they needed peak season cover

OhioOhioOhio · 27/05/2019 21:17

Say that you would buy extra special treats from the Asda fancy brand food section at Christmas time.

TokenGinger · 27/05/2019 23:51

I'd write something that shows she's responsible, I.e. "It would really depend on what's a priority at the time. If my family was in a spot of financial difficulty, I'd use the money to buy the family food shop for a week or two. If not, I'd put the money to one side to use for the Christmas food shop, knowing it's all sorted for us in advance."

dalmatianmad · 30/05/2019 14:19

Thanks everyone, it was a really small box, shes written that her horse needs a new saddle so she would use the cash towards this.

She's just driven to Asda with the firm, fingers crossed!!
