How old do you think my charity shop suitcase is?

Found this in a charity shop and just had to buy it. Can't help but imagine who would have owned it, whether it was passed down through a family, used for storage, or taken on holiday. Who knows! I love the mystery though.

Does anyone know anything about oldy worldy suitcases? I live in a Victorian cottage so would quite like it to be that old, but I am in love with it regardless. I am sure plenty would think it's old tat and not worth what I paid!

Any guesses as to how old it could be?

That's lovely! I have no idea about these things but it's likely that you could tell the age from the style of clasps/handles/hinges, that sort of thing.

CassandraCross · 27/05/2019 16:12

No idea, but I don't think it would be as old as Victorian my guess would be 1920's-1930's.

Soola · 27/05/2019 16:13

It’s fabulous.

Actually, wouldn't the size indicate train travel? Something smaller and more portable. Are there any maker's marks present?

BrexitLetsCalltheWholeThingoff · 27/05/2019 16:17

Don't know about the suitcase but your tiles are lovely!

Soola · 27/05/2019 16:18

I’ve googled

1960s suitcase

And

1940s suitcase and found similar designs.

JellyMouldJnr · 27/05/2019 16:23

I'd reckon 1950s or 1960s.

Shelbybear · 27/05/2019 16:24

I thought maybe 1960's but really I'm just guessing!

I like the underbed storage idea.

RavenLG · 27/05/2019 16:35

Aww DP had a suitcase pretty much identical to this but it broke (he actually used it as a case could never get him to upgrade to modern stuff)
No idea of age though so that was a useless post Grin

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 27/05/2019 16:36

Looks 50s I think. It’s lovely. What will you use it for?

bagpiss · 27/05/2019 16:37

I'd definitely use it as a prop for late forties onwards. It's lovely.

IncognitaIgnorama · 27/05/2019 16:38

50s-70s, OP - it's a nice piece Smile

Mustbetimeforachange · 27/05/2019 16:38

We have a similar one from my dad which is 1930s.

ilovesocks · 27/05/2019 16:59

Ahh thank you everyone.

@BrexitLetsCalltheWholeThingoff it's actually vinyl! I thought they were vinyl tiles but turns out it was a sheet of the stuff. We have dogs and use the porch like a boot room, so need something that is very easy to clean. It's called Baroque Lisbon colour 196.

I don't want to break it apart or anything, it will probably get used as a prop. Not sure where it will live yet, so it is currently in the porch with my Victorian overmantle.

Will attach a pic of the two markers I can see on it, as well as it's current home.

Love it OP, very Paddington Bear

My parents had an suitcase like that when I was a kid in the 1960's and it was old then, so i'm guessing mid 30's.

ProfYaffle · 27/05/2019 17:18

Ooh, interesting! I've got a trunk which looks to be from the same range. Same corner covers, locks and lining. My handles are chunky leather straps though. I've always guessed 1940s for mine but have no expertise at all in these matters. I keep all my family history documents in mine.

BrexitLetsCalltheWholeThingoff · 27/05/2019 18:35

Keep posting pics of your house, OP 😃

AbsentmindedWoman · 27/05/2019 18:40

Sixties Smile I have one!

BlackcurrantJamontoast · 27/05/2019 19:43

Probably 1930s. Worth £20 or less. I bought a similar one for £8 at a car boot recently and sold it for about £20.

Ebay is your friend- search through current and completed listings

Witchend · 27/05/2019 20:52

It looks similar to ones advertised as ww2. I'm trying to get 3-4 as props for a play so have been looking!
