Talking on another topic 2 of us mentioned "Mrs Harris goes to Paris" a lovely uplifting old fashioned book - ia there any books that other people like - either as a child or as an adult that you can suggest & tell us about them - briefly!
Mrs Harris is about an old fashioned char who saves & goes to Paris to buy Dior dress
& "Family at One end Street" children's story about a family with several dc before the ww2

I haven't read the whole read yet, but wondered if Alexander McCall Smith has been mentioned yet?

Doreen Tovey: the cat books are available on Amazon.

Just ordered Roses Round the Door (used) from Better World Books for much less than Abe or Amazon. And I treasure my battered copy of Life with Grandma, very funny.

I have the old audiotapes! They were never great quality sound wise but the newer versions on Audible.co.uk are unbearable, really irritating reader.

Anyone gone for EF Benson, The Mapp and Lucia Books are wonderful.
Anything by Nancy Mitford, another vote for the Provincial Lady.
Diary of a Nobody is sweet ( I love Lupin, it’s reassuring that parental worries are perennial)
Three Men in a Boat is hilarious

Mrs Pepperpot is splendid for children and I adore Millie Molly Mandy.
Miss Happiness and Miss Flower is about a little girl building a Japanese dolls house, it’s lovely too.

At the Back of The North Wind

The Princess and the Goblin

I’ll stop now..

Has anyone mentioned Margery Sharp? One of my favorites is Martha in Paris. It's the second of a trilogy but stands alone very well.

I love this, some of my all time favourites have been mentioned! Green knowe, gobbolino! Miss Read!

One recommendation I got from MN recently was A Croft in the Hills by Katharine Stewart which I loved. I do love a countryside memoir. Buster Johnson wrote a good one (despite being related to Boris). I also like Kate Morton books.

Thanks for all the recs.

Fun fact: when I was a girl in the 1980s I appeared in a German Mrs Harris film as a stand-in. My 15 seconds of fame Grin

I have just finished listening to the Gustav Sonata by Rose Tremain. It is set over the subjects lifetime. A gentle read (listen in my case). Has been given many stars on Amazon sonot just me who enjoyed it.

Greaves Phinn, his books are a wonderful insight into the life of a School Inspector.
