Is there somewhere you'd recommend breaking a journey from London to Falmouth for lunch please? Nothing fancy but nice location and cafe, perhaps?

We always stop at Mattia, an American Diner, it's great food.
We usually leave early and go for breakfast.

Have a look at The Montague Inn in Wincanton.

Not far from the A303 is the National Trust’s Stourhead, which has an excellent café/restaurant. Sandwiches, pastries, sausage rolls and a selection of freshly baked cakes are available as well as a range of hot food available from 12-3pm. They also do children’s lunchboxes, kids portions of hot food and have plates and cutlery for small hands, a small play area with soft matting, colouring sheets and books. Follow the brown signs off the A303 near Mere.

The Hunter’s Lodge Inn, near Wincanton is only one minute’s drive off the A303 and is very popular with families as it’s ideal to let the kids let off steam in the excellent, huge playground. It has a verandah and terrace ideal for outdoor dining. Food served all day every day.

Haynes Motor Museum is 2 minutes from the A303 and the café is open to non-museum visitors if you don’t have time to look around. Local produce, freshly cooked, breakfasts and lunches to cream teas and outside dining on the terrace.

Bird and Carter at Wylye is a farm shop/cafe/deli and it’s no more than 10 minutes from the A303. The deli counter sells the best scotch eggs around! There is cafe seating at the far end with large windows looking out to the paddocks. There are plenty of high chairs and toys and books for little ones. Sandwiches, quiches and pies are tasty, cakes are original – chocolate Guinness, ginger meringue etc...!
