Me and the dds are thinking of trying them, can anyone recommend some brands please?

Yes, they are amazing! I made the switch earlier this year and would never go back to horrible plastic disposables again.

Look for pads made by UK based small businesses. There are quite a few although many only make them to order so you need to wait for a few weeks to get your order. Look on My Natural Family Store (has a variety of brands available) or Fanny Paddams (their own brand, UK based one person business) or Crimson Moon CSP (their own brand, more pads added to stock weekly I think).

I also really recommend watching YouTube videos on CSP, I learnt so much from them - including lots of advice on what sizes to buy, different fabrics used as toppers and cores, how to clean them etc. etc.

Avoid cheaper multipacks from Amazon/eBay etc., these are usually Chinese made and inferior compared to small business made pads.

I use Precious Star Pads- a small business run by a wonderful YouTuber called Bryony who started the business as a teen when bed bound with Lyme disease.

She's a huge promotor of reusable menstrual products and her YouTube channel has tonnes of advice for anyone looking for eco-friendly alternatives.

They do some great starter kits too!

Reporting back!

I tried some Precious Stars ones. I really liked the feel of them and they were comfortable to wear. However, not particularly absorbent and they felt uncomfortable and wet (sorry if TMI).

I had been using Always Ultra before now which stay dry on the surface. I really want to use washables for environmental reasons. Should I try a different brand?

Have you considered period pants? I use some from Cheeky Wipes and they’re amazing.

ChalkandScissors · 18/06/2019 13:37

There is more wick-able fabric out there. I ended up making mine, and used a sport material for the top layer, which helps a lot. Worth having a look on etsy, and maybe messaging a seller?

Another option is to use a mooncup or other brand you like, and use cloth as backup.

Minivivi are great. They were originally designed for in continence but the lady behind them realised that they are great for periods too. I use them and am happy.

LuckyAmy1986 · 18/06/2019 14:40

I use Bloom & Nora bamboo fleece cloth sanitary pads and
these
www.amazon.co.uk/YOYI-FASHION-Breathable-Leakproof-Panties/dp/B0786YJ437/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?psc=1&s=clothing&crid=2MD27B3EGCIJ2&keywords=yoyi+fashion&sprefix=yoyi+fas%2Caps%2C141&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1560865123&sr=1-1-spons

and have nothing bad to say about either of them. The knickers are so good that I don't need to wear a pad or anything when I am wearing them (medium- heavy flow rather than v heavy) but they don't leak or come through the other side or anything.

LuckyAmy1986 · 18/06/2019 14:40

Oh and the pads from Bloom & Nora are very comfy!

LuckyAmy1986 · 18/06/2019 14:41

And they all wash up perfectly. Sorry, didn't need 3 separate posts I know, just afterthoughts!

NannyR · 18/06/2019 14:47

I use imse vimse pads. They are very absorbant, wash and dry well and are not bulky and stay put in my knickers. Earthwise girls is a good website as they have various brands and sizes.

twosoups1972 · 18/06/2019 15:07

Thank you, some good suggestions, I will have a look.

@ChalkandScissors actually do use a moon cup but with horrendous pre-menopausal periods I often need a pad as well.

I second period pants from cheeky wipes, won't go back to pads now.

stucknoue · 18/06/2019 15:28

Modibodi period pants and moon cup is a great combination for the older lady - added bonus, period pants are good for exercise during the rest of the month if those bladder muscles aren't great!

twosoups1972 · 18/06/2019 15:49

Older lady Grin I refuse to admit I am even middle aged yet!

I started using the Cheeky Wipes pads a few periods ago, supplemented with the Previous Stars budget night time ones. I've never been able to use anything internal and this has been such a revelation, for the first time since I was eleven years old, I don't feel like I'm in a nappy for a week out of the month 😍
