Ear piercing

Hi, how old do you think a child should be when they get their ears pierced, my family are giving me conflicting advice, my parents are very against ear piercing before becoming an adult but the in-laws pierced their daughters ears as baby’s. I don’t know what’s right

My DD pestered at 7 to have them done and we gave in and let her have them done. She wouldn't let us change them once the initial studs came out. She's asking for her 9th bday in a few weeks and I've said no because she obviously wasn't mature enough to look after them or let me do it.

What 2 year old takes notice of other children's ears and nags? 🤔

GlomOfNit · 27/05/2019 00:09

Why would any parent want a 2 yo's ears pierced? It really limits what they can do safely. She should be dashing round having fun without you worrying that she'll get a stud caught on something. She's not old enough to care for them and lightyears away from consent. Why on earth would you even consider it? Confused

I think sometimes culture plays a role in deciding the age so for me there is no right or wrong age so long as it's done safely

Culture is no excuse for modifying a childs body without consent. FGM is cultural, as is circumcision.

Piercing, circumcision, nose job, whatever. It’s cosmetic/elective and can wait until the child is old enough to consent.

Age 5 here. Went to a highly recommended piercing studio and they still used a gun. We've had no issues.

My DD had hers done last year when she was 9. It was a lot of cleaning and I wouldn't have wanted to do it earlier because I would have been the one having to do it.

But she was old enough to take responsibility and religiously looked after them.

So in answer to your question - when you think your DD is mature enough to take on the responsibility for herself.

The beginning of the summer holidays was good because she was at home and could do the lunchtime clean.

My daughter was 6. I was 11.

DD got hers done at 8. We are just out of the 6 week period. She looked after them brilliantly with little prompting from me.

It was a reward for getting some unpleasant but necessary dental work done.

She has never cried for vaccinations since she was two, so I knew she would be ok. Plus they do both ears at the same time and use numbing gel.

There are girls and boys who’ve had it done earlier and others who will need to wait. She is aware that every family has their own rules around this type of thing.

Certainly not toddler age and definitely big no to babies...the child has to understand what is involved and make their own mind up as to whether they'd like it done....why should parents choose...not their right to....not their body.

Once they start going on and it's apparent they'd really like it done, I think as a parent you have to assess your child's nature and coping ability. I speak from experience! Shes matured out if it a bit now, but my dd was a proper snowflake when she was younger....she'd have a meltdown having a plaster removed....oh the drama!! Stupidly I allowed her to have hers pierced at 6. She was very brave with the piercing itself (gun)....it was the aftercare. I had to do the bathing as I didnt trust her to do it properly, but she refused to remove them after the 6 weeks as she was too scared it would hurt. Long dry short(er!!) she got an infection...nightmare to deal with. We managed to remove them after she'd screamed the house down. Then refused to have them put back in so they closed over. Tried again at 9....pretty much the same happened again. Success at 13.. with double piercings too!!

WHAT!!!!????
They obviously weren't a decent piercing studio! No "decent" professional piercing studio would use a gun!
They don't train professional piercer's to use a gun.
My god, what on earth!!!

When they are old enough to sign the consent form

MrsBJr · 22/06/2019 12:58

Hello, does anyone know of any mobile ear piercers that use a needle in the Addlestone Surrey area?
