Which thrifty thing do you do that you're surprised that no one else does?

Basically, that Grin

I'm always surprised when people don't bulk buy things (toilet paper, store cupboard staples etc) or only buy name brands. How much tastier can a posh tinned tomato really be?

Dh is mortified when I reuse bath water to water the plants or make my own cleaning cloths from old pants. But he does love a charity shop bargain (most of his coats are from there).

What are your favourite thrifty tips or what thrifty things are you surprised that other people don't do?

With regard to brands, they often taste better due to extra sugar and/or fat so switching to own brands is often better for health as well as your pocket. Besides, unless you are comparing side by side, I don’t think you notice really.

Sign up to BookBub and read free ebooks. Also I’m very proud of the fact that I bought a drab cardigan for 1/3rd the original price and then dyed it a fabulous purple for a fiver!

""I thought getting shoes reheeled was just a normal part of life? Are there really people who throw shoes away just because the heel has worn down?"

Yes, because I can often buy new shoes for cheaper than what the cobbler charges.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 27/05/2019 23:06

I have never taken shoes to a cobbler, don’t actually know where there is a cobbler

Jonas14 · 27/05/2019 23:08

Gave up amazon (don’t want to make the richest man in the world any richer) for new year and amazed how much I save by doing a tiny bit of research, often the sellers on amazon have their own websites with the same products cheaper!
Always book accommodation (hotels s/c, B&b), flights, etc direct. Often cheaper and accommodation owners often delighted not to have to pay up to 20% commission and if anything goes wrong, it’s often easier to cancel/ make changes if you’ve booked direct.
Pay cash with local businesses. CC fees are actually very high!

"Try to NEVER attend social events which have a costume theme. Seriously, the amount of money my mates waste on fancy dress is actually ridiculous. My hen do theme was “I don’t know, wear what you want.”"

Well, obviously you don't buy a whole new costume, that would be very wasteful, you just wear something you already have.
I also don't really know why British people still do dressing up as adults. It doesn't seem to be a thing anywhere else in Europe, except for carnival.

I think Timpsons resoles/heels shoes.

SuziQ10 · 27/05/2019 23:11

I'm not very thrifty, sadly, but I have swapped using laundry pods (the ones in the plastic box) for a big cardboard box of washing powder. It lasts ages, I think that's saved me at least £6 a month and a bit less plastic to landfill.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 27/05/2019 23:14

Bought EL Doublewear 200ml on eBay My friends and I shared cost & product
So cost effective.

Gwenhwyfar · 27/05/2019 23:17

"I think Timpsons resoles/heels shoes."

I avoid Timpsons on principle, but yes, you can find cobblers at locksmiths and where I live there is one in a shoe shop. Hardly ever worth it unfortunately.

Gwenhwyfar · 27/05/2019 23:19

"Bought EL Doublewear 200ml on eBay My friends and I shared cost & product"

So, you're only getting half each? How does that save money?
I can see how sharing a piece of equipment makes sense as you can both still use it, but here you're just buying half of it...

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 27/05/2019 23:21

Amazon prime has been so convenient for me.the same & next day delivery

MachineBee · 27/05/2019 23:27

Batch bake and freeze. Use large slow cooker and freeze extra portions. Line dry laundry or use pull out airer when rainy. This saves on energy bills.

Turn off shower when lathering/shampooing and wee in shower. Use water butts for garden. Saves a lot on water bills.

Save ice-lolly sticks for plant labels in garden.

Use 10-15% less meat than called for in recipes - add more veg to bulk up.

Whenever something costs less than expected, a DD/SO reduces or finishes, I always add the amount saved or the amount of the payment that finished to my monthly saving SO. It soon mounts up and you don’t notice as your outgoings technically stay the same. Also, any money left in account at the end of the month goes straight to saving account- even if just a few pence.

Quintella · 27/05/2019 23:27

I pay more for the brands as it's TOTALLY worth it. Even M&S bread is dire. Hovis all the way!

About ten years ago I temped in a Hovis factory and the same bread that was packed in Hovis wrapping was also supplied to various chains, inc. M&S, in their own brand's packaging.

WingingWonder · 27/05/2019 23:28

Check discount codes before buying anything
Use top cashback or Quidco with all purchases
Check their PPI (really- I was the biggest cynic)
Pay for online postage when there are ways of not!
I earn well but cannot shop without doing all the above. I actually annoy myself for it, but growing up without much money meant the adage of saving pennies makes pounds has always stuck...

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 27/05/2019 23:33

EL doublewear retail £33.5 for 30ml
We paid £60 for 200ml, split 5 ways. £12 for same product.£21 saving we received 40ml each , that’s 10ml more than store size

MachineBee · 27/05/2019 23:36

Oh and if space is a problem to bulk buy have you thought about putting it up in the loft?

Saracen · 27/05/2019 23:40

Offset mortgage. In effect, your savings earns the same interest as your mortgage rate. Plus you don't have to pay any tax on the interest income because it isn't technically income, but rather a reduction to your loan. (The latter point isn't as relevant as it once was, since the tax rules changed and the first £1000 per year in interest isn't taxable.)

Also, mortgages which allow overpayments to be made, and which credit overpayments immediately, so you're paying interest on a smaller loan. Then throw all the money you can at it. If you are getting by okay financially and then get a pay rise, put the pay rise toward the mortgage.

Both of the above can take years off your mortgage, saving vast amounts of money.

@LipstickHandbagCoffee I'd be very cautious buying makeup off eBay, most of it is fake and imported with all sort of crap in it

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 27/05/2019 23:43

It was absolutely fine and completely authentic
I agree you need to find a reputable seller, and when you do there are bargains to be had

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 27/05/2019 23:43

Also what are the chances of 5 of you being the same shade 🤔

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 27/05/2019 23:49

Fortunately all same EL shade so we bought together to get a huge bargain
That’s obvs why the five of us co-purchased.almost as if we planned it😉
Done same with Davines shampoo and conditioner litre bottle split 4 ways

BadLad · 27/05/2019 23:50

A bit more legroom and boarding the plane earlier doesn't seem worth the massive price difference.

Have you ever flown business class on a decent airline?

It's not "a bit more leg room", it's shitloads more legroom, as well as a flat bed with bedding and nobody moaning about you for reclining, no need to climb over other people or juggle the food trays when someone wants the bog at meal times, better food (and more of it), better wines, endless champagne, nicer freshening up kit, more storage space, bigger luggage allowance, use of airport lounges, better service as the flight attendants have fewer passengers to deal with, shorter queues at check in and sometimes it includes transport to and from the airport.

It makes the flight a pleasure, rather than something to be endured.

It is expensive. It's worth it to avoid the misery of long haul economy.
