What is this fruit/veg (pic)

Does anyone know what this fruit/veg is growing from a tree in the park.

I have attached a picture but it's a bit of a rubbish one, you might need to zoom in. The tree is covered in them, they look exactly like green olives, except they aren't.

There was a family in the park eating them off the tree and collecting them and I asked them what the name was but they said they didn't know. I thought it was a bit weird eating a fruit you didn't know but they said they cover them with sauce and they taste nice (?)

We live in NE England so climate is cool so unlikely to be olives. I stood on one and it had a small pip inside. I smelt it and it smelt citrusy but not sweet. I broke one apart and tasted the juice and it was kind of sour.

Help me! Both me and DH are stumped.

They aren't crab apples btw.

Almond?

Ellabella989 · 26/05/2019 15:37

Some form of gooseberry?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 26/05/2019 15:37

Greengages.

A green plum variety. Very nice.

I'd be surprised if it's a greengage. We have a greengage tree, doesn't look like that at all and no fruit yet and we are in sunny SE.

samsamsamsamsamsam · 26/05/2019 15:39

Could be greengages, but if they were they were majorly unripe as they were the size of olives and rock hard. This family had the tree stripped of them which is annoying as there won't be any left when they are ripe.

Except none if those grow here / like that, or are ripe now...

Ces6 · 26/05/2019 15:40

They look like something DD was given off a tree earlier this week but I can't remember what it was called! She said it was like an under-ripe cherry (but it looked like an olive).

DramaAlpaca · 26/05/2019 15:42

I'm sure it's too early for greengages, especially in the NE, and they aren't the right shape either. But I don't know what they actually are.

Ces6 · 26/05/2019 15:43

Could it be this?

samsamsamsamsamsam · 26/05/2019 16:03

Hmm I was hoping it was an almond but it didn't have ridges around the 'fruit' it was smooth all round like an olive.

It might be green plum. I am not sure how to post a pic but google it.

IncognitaIgnorama · 26/05/2019 16:09

Maybe post over on the gardening threads too, OP? Lots of knowledgeable folks there for plant id

Bloodymary · 26/05/2019 16:25

Could they be sloe's? If so; they should not be harvested now.
I would certainly not be eating a fruit if I did not know what it was Confused

Duster12 · 26/05/2019 16:30

People like this selfish family need to fuck off.

FiremanKing · 26/05/2019 16:31

Damson fruitlets?

FiremanKing · 26/05/2019 16:32

There's an app called seek which identifies plants, I've used it in our garden as we've loads of things planted by the previous owner that I didn't recognise.

MaidenMotherCrone · 26/05/2019 16:39

It's an unripe plum. They ripen mid to late August. DH is a gardener and knows these things.

YellowBelle · 26/05/2019 16:42

Could be wrong but I thought almonds were a bit fuzzy with thinner leaves. My guess would be unripe plums as I think it's far too early for them to be ready. No idea why anyone would want to eat unripe plums though!

Bloodymary · 26/05/2019 16:42

That family will all have one hell of a belly ache!!!

YellowBelle · 26/05/2019 16:43

Cross post with Maiden, had this open a while Smile

samsamsamsamsamsam · 27/05/2019 09:55

I think its an unripe plum. Argh I'm so annoyed now - it's in a park that has a community orchard so I shouldn't be annoyed (essentially they can take what they want)

But that at the same time if you imagine a Sainsbury's shopping bag, it was half full with olive-sized unripe plums (hundreds)

and now no one else can go and get any when they ripen because the trees are bare.

What was the sauce they mentioned, out of interest? I'm having trouble guessing what would make unripe plums tasty!

samsamsamsamsamsam · 28/05/2019 15:59

They didnt, they said they take them, cook them and cover them in a sauce. didnt specify which though!
