Just that really, ds (20) has justbeen caught, he hasn't realised his license had expired, he wasn't actually fishing, but 'preparing' to fish.

Up to £2500 so a bit of an unknown really.

I know, was just hoping someone's dh/dp etc would be able to tell me if the fine usually is that severe

They quite often do give a high end fine from what I and my husband have seen when out on trips. Sometimes they are lenient though, no way of telling, but a top end fine wouldn’t be unusual, sorry.

Did they let him keep his gear? They have the powers to confiscate your fishing equipment on the spot as well (Rods, nets, tackle, bite alarms the lot)

CatstorTroy · 26/05/2019 16:58

I've been given numerous fines usually only twice the total of the licence. But as others say I've heard it can vary wildly.

CatstorTroy · 26/05/2019 16:59

But to clarify my fines weren't for having no license outright but for only having 1 license. (Fishing with 3 rods)

You mean as in 1000s terrified?
Thanks Troy, how long ago did you receive your fines?

Im hoping they'll be more lenient as he wasn't actually fishing, was polite and cooperative, and went and bought a license straight away

I'm as much help as a chocolate teapot but could the fact that his license has run out shows that he normally abides by the rules and does get a permit and he is not a chancer that was prepared to take the risk of not being caught? Maybe that is the defence for a reduced fine.

Loopylou6 · 26/05/2019 17:24

Hope so cool dad, he did produce his old licenses

Yes, it sounds like he may be able to argue that it was an oversight and he hadn't realised his licence had run out - how long ago did it expire?

Probably a good idea to be super careful in future and set himself a reminder to renew his licence in good time each year?

The links on the EA website suggest that fines can be much lower than the maximum, so the fine isn't necessarily going to be massive

eg - 'Holt was given a fine of £300 and ordered to pay trial costs of £800, plus a £30 victim surcharge, after appealing a previous fine of £220' suggests that the first fine was 'only' £220.

Or this person was fined £500 including costs.

The bigger fines might be for persistant offenders and/or well off people, who need to be fined more to feel the impact.

November Barbara Blush
I'm so annoyed with him, but I also feel sorry for him, he's a good lad, never leaves rubbish on the bank and picks up any litter that others have left, he's genuinely very respectful, he's absolutely mortified
