Books for an almost 5 Year Old

My DS is a voracious reader/story listener.

He can't read that well himself yet but spends hours looking at books and is always asking for us to read to him.

We have the 'classics' which he loves, Julia Donaldson etc, every picture book going he has enjoyed. He loves the Mog stories and the Alfie stories and the slightly longer picture books by the Ahlbergs etc.

I would like to start reading him a longer chapter style book at bedtime along with his picture books. I think he would enjoy having a chapter a night.

We tried Mr Gum, but it was just going over his head a bit. We tried James and the Giant Peach but that was hard going, the language was quite old fashioned and he's just not quite ready for it yet. I have found it hard to find something where the language was accessible for a younger child.

He doesn't seem to be keen on the idea of Horrid Henry as thats what I suggested initially.

Any good recommendations? I had wondered about the Enid Blyton books, but there are SO many I wouldn't know where to start.

What longer/chapter books have your 5 year olds enjoyed.

My DS (4) has just really enjoyed The Twits

Interested in this thread. My DD 4.5 loves bedtime stories. We do two or three picture books (mog, hungry catapillar, pip and posy etc) each night but I think she's now able to focus a little longer and would enjoy something new.
I've been to the library but haven't found anything that I immediately thought would be a winner.
I don't want to start with something with older style language. I borrowed a Daisy Meadows book, something about animals, but we haven't started it yet.

Winnie the Witch is popular here - the picture books are great (Korky Paul's illustrations are a treat) Then there are stories with the same characters that are aimed at slightly older children, with fairly self-contained chapters.

Just turned 4yo here who's enjoyed all the Roald Dahl ones - maybe Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, or the Twits could be good if James and the Giant Peach wasn't great...? I didn't enjoy reading the BFG because of the long passages to read out in his idiosyncratic English.

She also got a couple of 'Rabbit and Bear' ones for her birthday which she liked, and which are enjoyable to read.

I attempted Winnie the Pooh because I loved that as a child, but it's so subtle in some places that it went way over her head - a lot of fun to read though.

The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark by Gill Murphy was very popular in our house . There’s a few others in the series if that proves a hit.

Dick King Smith books such as All Because Of Jackson, Martin’s Mice, The Hodgeheg are worth a try too.

Mine liked a set I got from the book people at that in-between stage. It was the Walker stories collection.
