Tooth abscess question.

How long can I realistically put off the tooth abscess?

It's been bad since yesterday morning but know it's bank holiday weekend.

I'm fairly sure it's an abscess as tooth hurts to touch, eating hurts and foul smelling odour.

Is it safe to leave it until Tuesday?

I had one a couple of weeks ago. I bough some Corsodyl, flossed carefully around the area, and rinsed with salt water really regularly and it went away .. I was amazed! (I did also pop it but that bit is a bit gross!)

Warm, salty water to rinse regularly with. This will encourage the pus to come out. If you start to feel unwell rather than just pain and any warning signs of sepsis seek help.

Thank you both.
Strangely fun is not sore just the tooth which is like a raw nerve.
Watching out for adverse effects.
Have warm salt watered and taken pain killers and naproxen.

Ooh you poor thing... just be very careful of signs it's getting worse. I put off getting one looked at and woke up one morning in agony, with a yellow (jaundiced) face puffed up one side like a balloon; it was hideous. Only good thing is once it's that bad you can get seen pretty pronto! Hope yours settles down anyway 🤞

AhhhHereItGoes · 26/05/2019 11:40

Thanks @Badtasteflump luckily fingers crossed it's only proper painful when eating/drinking things. Otherwise it's a full pulse. The top of the tooth feels loose though which is not great and sleeping seems to be a no go. I hope you had yours dealt with relatively painlessly.

I've had an impacted wisdom tooth so know the drill (pun intended). Had to get a twilight sleep for that one!

Mine was a lot better with antibiotics and prescription strength codeine! I eventually had a root canal which failed two years later causing another abscess Hmm, leading to an extraction. I was told a repeat root canal would need a specialist which would have cost thousands Shock.

I’m much better about keeping up with dental check ups now but I think if it happened again I would just have an extraction and save the hours of faff.

AhhhHereItGoes · 26/05/2019 19:41

@Badtasteflump yeah if they offer it extraction would be preferred. I think it's happened as there was a tiny gap between tooth and gum which was hard to brush/floss adequately.

Can you phone the NHS 24 hour line? They might let you see an emergency dentist, when I had an abscess though they wouldn't let me see one because it wasn't swollen up to my eye.
It's probably best to get started on antibiotics straight away.

Finally got an appointment in an hour - yay!
Kinda dreading it now though...
