Bat in the bedroom!

WalterIris · 25/05/2019 17:10

Exactly as the title. A Bat has appeared from somewhere and ended up on the bedroom floor.

I have so far, put a cardboard box near it, opened the window wide, and closed the bedroom door. When we went near it to attempt to slide the side of the box under it, it hissed.

That was an hour ago, I'm now downstairs, ignoring the matter until it gets dark. What are the chances of it just flying back out by itself? (it was on the floor). And if not?

I have gloves, a box and a towel....

It hissed?! OMFG! Move house, immediately! Is it big, small, so you have a kid’s fishing net anywhere?

Here's an instructional video on what to do when a bat gets into your home:

Ummmm. Garlic? 🦇

Summerorjustmaybe · 25/05/2019 17:17

Is your name Meg?

BrillyPribble · 25/05/2019 17:18

Look at the bat conservation society website, there's a number you can call for help! We had a bat in our house a few years back. Ours sadly died and we then stuffed it into a test tube and posted it off to them 🦇

greenelephantscarf · 25/05/2019 17:19

get a large towel and put it over the bat.

Its quite small, well it may just be averaged sized for a bat, no expert here as you can tell. Are there that many regular different types it could be? Would hope not the vampire type

Yes it hissed when we were near. Like a long rattling noise. Stopped once we moved away

Towel over it and wait until it's dusk before putting it near an open door or large window. I once came home from work to a bat flying round in my lounge. Scared the heck out of me and I still don't know how it had got in or how long it had been in the house!

HUZZAH212 · 25/05/2019 17:29

The hissing is bat panic mode. I'd try again with the box but as someone who once realised a mouse in an alley wasn't a mouse when it ran up the wall in front of me. Well... 😦

MitziK · 25/05/2019 17:29

It'll most likely leave at dusk.

ipswichwitch · 25/05/2019 17:33

Im howling at that video 😂

ipswichwitch · 25/05/2019 17:36

You need to send Derry in with a bigger towel

FiremanKing · 25/05/2019 17:38

What a shame I was hoping the thread was going to be about UB40 bringing out a follow up song to this

AndTheEnd · 25/05/2019 17:41

Loving Maureen watching from behind the glass Grin

Mumski45 · 25/05/2019 17:45

They like the dark. So when it's gone dark open all windows and put the light on then shut the door and wait. This worked when I found one spinning round in my bedroom.

herecomestherainagain2 · 25/05/2019 17:53

My cat brought a dead one in a while ago.....

WalterIris · 26/05/2019 08:15

The conclusion to the Bat trama was rather dull im afraid.

After wedging the window wide open and closing bedroom door around 4pm, we just ignored the bat. On going in ready for bat battle at around 9pm once it was dark, it appears it left on its own accord.

Luckily the bedroom is in mid decoration mode so no curtains or clutter for it to hide behind.

Thanks for the advice

Be careful how you handle it: we lived in an ancient property years ago and were told by the Batman (what else do you call them Grin) that if we touched 2 hanging off our oak door we could be heavily fined because they’re protected. I told him if we didn’t they would likely be eaten by the cats, so he very grudgingly and grumpily said we could put them in a container until he arrived.

OldUnit · 26/05/2019 08:22

I have pippistrelles. They're really very small, like tiny flying mice.

They do hiss, and squeal. They live in the attic, one flew through bedroom window once and landed on my bath towel.

If they land on the ground they struggle to get airborne again so it's best to be put as high as possible in a bush if another appears.

They can get down chimneys and come in via the gas/electric fire or stove.

If it was lying on the floor it was probably exhausted. I get rid of them by opening an outside door or window wide and waiting - I think they can sense the cooler air and head for that. They are veeeeeery hard to catch with a net or towel as they sense it flapping around and fly round it.

Bluntness100 · 26/05/2019 08:31

You did the right thing. We have bats and occasionally one comes in the window, I've learned to close them before dusk. We did once try to throw a towel over one, but it was doing a marathon round the room and was impossible. Ultimately you just need to leave the window open and shut the doors and wait till it makes its own way out.

WalterIris · 26/05/2019 09:21

We have been installing a new loft ladder and hatch recently, and its in but the edge still has a gap. I think it may have come down through the loft.
Today's projects is to finish sealing it up. We have cats, so its lucky they didnt find it first
