Cake disaster.. I can't be the only one!

Made some lovely banana & walnut cake squares for DDs lunch and as a treat as I'm on a diet.

Well, they would have been lovely had I not managed to burn them to solid black chunks other than an inch square bit in the very middle which tastes delicious (yes, I cut one up to see if they could be salvaged they can't!). I was busy working out how to add mods to bloody Minecraft so DD could place 3D objects and although I heard the timer, I just wanted to finish the faff that was the installer and versions and aaaarrrgh! Left in for about three times as long as they should've been.. you could break skulls with them!

I know they're just banana breads but I used the last of my flour, all my sugar & walnuts and all but one egg so can't remake them and I was so bloody looking forward to having some homemade cake which I could kid myself wasn't as horrendous as shop bought (although the amount of sugar in them was criminal!!)

I can't be the only one who has managed to burn something so bloody impossible to fuck up? Please cheer me up as I am ridiculously upset over this and need to get over myself...

House smells horrid as well which us what finally alerted me Blush

You are not alone.
When I was a teenager, I got into baking (which my parents enjoyed!) Trying out a new recipe, it says cook at 350 degrees - well, the oven didn't go that high but I figured wack it up to as high as possible and just cook for longer. Blush
At least I now know about the difference between Celsius and Fahrenheit...

I cremated a casserole on the hob once. It stunk and was charcoal all the way through. And it took hours of soaking to clean the pan.

The first time dh and I cooked in the oven in our first home together was the time we discovered the cooker was Fahrenheit and not the Centigrade we were used to. Not burnt thankfully, but only just defrosted. Took a long time to get dinner that night (although we were very relieved to find that we didn't have to replace the cooker once we figured out the problem!)

Always set the timer for 5 minutes before they should be done and then check. You may have a fast oven.

Also, the very SECOND you can smell them in the oven - they're done.

I do not blame you for being upset Sad.
