Wtf is wrong with my ankle?!

Shamelessly posting here for traffic but still not brave enough for the traffic on AIBU...

My ankle hurts! Going to try and give as much info as I can as dr google has been useless.

It's the inner side on my right foot, right on the ankle near to the bone that sticks out.

It doesn't hurt all the time and I can walk normally on it.

There's no tenderness, redness, bruising or swelling.

Every now and then I get a sharp pain that normally lasts a second or two and until today and yesterday didn't linger. (It only lingers if I don't rest I think?) If it does linger it's not for long, a few minutes.

I have full range of movement.

The pain happens as my foot leaves the floor iyswim. So it doesn't hurt to stand, doesn't hurt to even put full weight on it standing on only that leg, but as I lift my foot to move I get this searing sharp pain. I also noticed it hurt as I was standing and lifted it for a few seconds and was leaning to get something, my good foot was on the floor and bad foot in the air. I think my toes were in a kind of splayed position.

I've had a recent change of footwear, it might be relevant...the shoes I've been wearing are those stacked trainer type things so it's like a flatform trainer. But it's worse today in standard flat shoes, barefoot or slippers.

Is it a ligament or something? But that's a sprain and I don't think it fits sprain symptoms?

I'm bemused and in occasional annoying pain! It doesn't seem a&e worthy as it's not very severe and not constant.

Anyone got any ideas?!

We're just giving this a bump for you, OP. We'd always recommend seeking RL support with this kind of thing, so a GP visit perhaps. Flowers

You might have pulled your posterior tibial tendon.

Your GP probably won't have a clue. See either a decent physio or possibly a podiatrist. I have a chronic ankle problem and have bounced round a few different physios and I find some of them not overly clued up on ankles.

Hopefully it's something which can be resolved swiftly. Mine dragged on so I did end up going to see the GP who referred me to the hospital and I ended up having mri scans, etc. But initially the GP will just say try physio. I wish I'd seen a podiatrist earlier because I think my problem might have been diagnosed earlier.

I don’t know what it is but I’d get it looked at/treated ASAP. I partially tore a ligament 3 years ago and the minor injuries unit was a bit rubbish and I’ve still got major problems with it. I think it needed an x Ray , splint for a bit then proper physio but I wasn’t offered any those and just told to rest it for a few days and take ibuprofen. I wish I’d been more pro-active about trying to get it appropriately treated.

Mine started with an agonisingly sharp pain while I was shopping in town. I couldn’t bear to put my weight on it all. If I kept it perfectly still though it wasn’t painful. Yours could be tendon/ligament but don’t leave it if it isn’t getting easier.

Ah right, thank you! I'll start looking for a podiatrist. Can GPs refer to podiatrists? Or are they all private?

I've just googled and it sounds like it could be it Nico. I think I'm at stage 1 so no major damage so far but I'm going to start some exercises for it. I'm pretty sure it's down to the shoes I've been wearing and I'm slightly upset about that because I bloody loved them!

GPs can refer but the waiting list on the NHS is loooong. Well it is where I am. I was told about 7 months. My rheumatologist referred me 2 months ago and I’ve not heard a thing yet.

IdClimbHimLikeATree · 26/05/2019 13:52

Thanks Robin. Blimey seven months is long. It's crap. Hope you get sorted soon Thanks

My dad gets something called tendonitis which is extremely painful but can cause a bit of swelling.

Other than that it may be that you have a chip of bone floating around that occasionally hits a nerve xx

NicoAndTheNiners · 26/05/2019 15:18

I'm currently waiting to see a podiatrist privately and its a 3 month wait!

IdClimbHimLikeATree · 26/05/2019 15:47

Oh my word, Nicole, really?!

I was wondering if it was a bit of bone floating around. If it was I wonder how long that takes to bugger off!

Autocorrected to Nicole, sorry obvs meant Nico!

If it's a bit of bone floating around I believe it normally needs removing. But that would normally happen at the front of the ankle not the side from what ive read.

Yes for the 3 month wait but this is with the best podiatrist in town. I suspect if I'd rung round I could have found someone else quicker but I want a specific podiatrist with an interest in rehabbing athletes.

Jon65 · 26/05/2019 16:34

Plantar fascitis?

NicoAndTheNiners · 26/05/2019 16:39

Plantar fasciitis would cause pain on the sole of the foot I think.

IdClimbHimLikeATree · 26/05/2019 18:00

Yeah I looked into plantar fasciitis and it didn't really fit. I wondered if it would have a knock on effect on the ankle but it would be felt on the sole as well I think.

Pretty sure it's the tendon and I've been doing some stretching exercises I found on YouTube by two American physical therapists. I strapped it up to make dinner as well as that seems to involve the kind of movements that make it happen and it seemed ok.

I'm hobbling but I think it's just in case and it's annoying really.

It's a bit of a wake up call really as I suspect it's tied in to recent weight gain due to not caring about what I eat/comfort eating.
