How long does it take to clean your house top to bottom?

I finally hired a cleaner after many years of saying I wouldn't. I always saw it as a bit bourgeois tbh.

DH never cleans. He's maybe hovered the carpets 5 times in 10 years.

Anyway, got a cleaner who did the whole house (3 bed 1930s house) in 3 hours.

DH came come and said the place is sparkling. I said it's because the cleaner came today. I said she did it all in 3 hours. He was surprised that it took 3 hours to clean the whole house.

When I've tried to clean the house it's taken me much longer and I miss bits.

How long would it take you to clean the house, dusting, hovering, cleaning cooler, doors and skirting boards?

End of terrace 3 bedroom family home.

When we first moved in we hired professional cleaners to deep clean the whole house. They didn't bother with the fridge but did everything else. There were two of them, I believe it took them 3-4 hours.

gubbsywubbsy · 25/05/2019 14:53

3 hours .. 4 large beds and 4 bathrooms .. if changing beds and washing too it takes me 4 hours ... I do it once a week but I don't work so I can .. I move fast as well .

I've no idea. I imagine cleaning a house from top to bottom all in one go is really, really, really boring, so I've never tried.

4 hrs. 4 bed, 2 sitting rooms, 3 bathrooms.

Daenerys77 · 25/05/2019 15:16

Three hours including a break for a cup of tea halfway through and a shower afterwards.

lboogy · 25/05/2019 19:26

@LadyEnidButton DH thought 3 hours was too long. Our house is 90sqm so not massive.

However, this is coming from a man who has never cleaned beyond wipe crumbs from the counter after making toast. 🙄

Took two us about 4 hrs each today for all house excluding bedrooms. That did include pulling out all white goods, washing all walls, doors, upvc, windows, bannister rails (2 sets) cupboards/bookcases and rearranging stuff. We are also on washing load four. We both work full time and have 3 teens that are animals.

Cleaner comes twice a week for 4 hours each time
She does everything including ironing
Standard 3 bed
I do very little
She is very good at cleaning
I am not

Biancadelrioisback · 25/05/2019 19:56

Full on deep clean throughout in 2 hours.
I have to fit it in that time as I can't pick it back up after DS wakes up. I blast through though. DH takes ages when he tried to help so I usually send him away so I can just do it.

arseabouttit · 25/05/2019 20:03

It's never clean top to bottom - it's like the Forth Bridge round here. We also lack storage so it's quite hard keeping the piles of paper under control, not to mention endless washing. Given up ironing unless strictly necessary.

Cleaner 6hrs a week (2 of them come 3hrs twice) plus I do kitchen / sweeping etc every day & downstairs loo whenever it's awful in between times or people coming round.

Family of 5 & 2 dogs for context and a lot of bathrooms.

arseabouttit · 25/05/2019 20:04

Should say 2x 2hrs. Sorry!

arseabouttit · 25/05/2019 20:05

Which makes 8hrs. (Sorry have had wine this afternoon and can't count)Hmm

HelloJackie · 25/05/2019 20:06

I do a proper deep clean on sundays, changing bedding, vacuuming, steaming, tidying, wiping all the surfaces down, cleaning windows, doors, frames and skirting boards and it takes me about 3 hours (which I don't think is too bad). 2 bedroom house but I really don't think an extra bedroom would take more than 20 minutes.

I think it's a lot easier to clean properly and quickly if the house is already kept to a good standard. It's the laundry that seems to take up most of my day to day life!

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 25/05/2019 20:10

Our cleaner takes two hours, three bed semi, three double bedrooms, three reception rooms, kitchen and bathroom of and the hall/stairs/landing. One of the bedrooms is a guest room and rarely used other than for ironing and DS isn't sleeping in his own room yet although we it it for nappy changes, dressing etc.

Kim82 · 25/05/2019 20:12

I’ve done a top to bottom clean today and it took me 4.5 hours. 4 bed house and it included tidying kids bedrooms, putting clutter away, cleaning all indoor windows and mirrors, dusting everywhere, hoovering, mopping, etc etc.

Susanna88 · 25/05/2019 20:21

My 2 bedroom Victorian terrace with large rear extension takes me at least 4 hours to do a 'proper clean'. That doesn't include taking appliances out or cleaning oven etc. Just the stuff that needs to be done weekly.

My cleaner who I only have occasionally (say once every 2 months) when I'm snowed under with work will have the whole house gleaming in 2 hours. There are occasionally bits she misses, but on the whole does a great job.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 25/05/2019 21:06

I've never pulled out an appliance and cleaned behind it Grin.

I've been to Zumba today, done a bit of shopping on the High Street, hung out one load of laundry, put away all the clean pots and pans from the draining board, emptied a couple of bins, emptied the upstairs bins, done an hour's music practice, had a nap, folded and put two loads of clean sheets and towels away, cooked a nutritious evening meal packed full of vegetables, tidied the patio, watered all the outdoor plants, sorted out my greenhouse. I don't know what I would have had time to do any cleaning, let alone 3 or 4 hours worth.

MitziK · 25/05/2019 21:57

In bursts of 15 minutes a time, it would probably take me about 6 hours (with rests/cuppas).

DP - about nine months.

It took me four days 9 - 6pm to get the place sparkling after his idea of cleaning had been going on for the last year. I was completely fucked physically afterwards, but I don't think I've done more than about two hours a week since.

ElizaPancakes · 25/05/2019 23:22

Honestly don’t know.

I could probably dust and hoover surfaces, clean bathroom and kitchen in three hours. Possibly not if you’re including changing beds, cleaning oven, cleaning fridge and of course all the tidying that comes beforehand!

RevokeRemainReform · 26/05/2019 04:58

DH takes ages when he tried to help so I usually send him away so I can just do it

And that is how so many men get away with doing no housework ...

MenaMum · 26/05/2019 05:11

To clean without tidying about 2 hours. To clean including tidying and sorting many hours and I've never finished this.

RiversDisguise · 26/05/2019 05:19

It takes me two weeks to clean both floors properly.

Obviously a cleaner would need less, maybe 2 hours... vacuum, dusting, kitchen, bathroom wipedown.

Pinkvoid · 26/05/2019 05:25

Makes sense, they are professionals after all. If I asked you to cut someone’s hair today, I’m sure you would botch up the job whereas a trained hairdresser could probably do it in their sleep.

You’re not a professional cleaner so won’t do as good a job and it’ll take longer, completely normal. I’m not very good at cleaning and I’d say a full top to bottom clean would take 5-6 hours.

OkPedro · 26/05/2019 05:37

8 hours a day cleaning? This can’t be real? I haven’t spent 8 hours cleaning in one week!
How dirty can a house be that requires 8 hours cleaning a day?
I imagine if I needed to clean my house top to bottom in one day it would take 4/5 hours (only because I don’t clean every day) if I cleaned every day I’m sure I could have the house clean in less than 2 hours

RiversDisguise · 26/05/2019 05:42

There's light maintenance cleaning and there's proper cleaning, though...unscrewing things, wiping out the insides of drawers, ironing curtains, etc.

That takes a lot longer.
