Disneyland Florida.... fast passes.

Have been planning a trip. But have seen that the fast pass system has changed. And it seems to work in favour of the people who stay at the hotels. I have seen people who can’t get any fast passes for the best rides at all.

Has anyone found this? I personally not bothered as I don’t like the rides but my husband does and so does my son. Just wondered how people have found this. Have u been able to book anything 30 days before. We are going in April

We went last year but didn't stay onsite and booking fast passes was fine. We struggled for some rides like FOP but I think most people did/do. We managed to get booked for everything else we wanted. Something useful I discovered at the end of the first week, was that if you have booked a fast pass for a ride but the normal queue only has a short wait time, you can cancel the fast pass and book something else. Have a great holiday, we loved it and can't wait to go back.

Fast pass availability if you’re not staying on property is only an issue for the newest rides - flights of passage, slinky dog, and I assume Galaxy’s edge will be carnage.

Everything else is fine, and you can do the others by getting to the parks early

We went in April - Easter hols. Couldn't get FOP - we got there early and queued. And couldn't get 7 Dwarves Mine Train (we weren't bothered about that). We got everything else we wanted.

Lots of advice and strategy on thedibb.co uk or I highly recommend The Unofficial guide to Walt DisneyWorld (Disneyland is in California). This book has touring plans you can copy which help you ride or see attractions/shows in an order to minimise queuing. There's an app too, subscription is about $10, but worth it. You will be fully set up with the book though. New edition out this autumn for 2020 which will include the new Star Wars land. (We are going for the first-time this year and love the parks, AMA)

That should say fifth time!

Nquartz · 25/05/2019 07:04

Does depend when you go, we've been in term time and their 'quiet' time and got fast passes for 7 dwarfs for example which is notoriously hard to get, but also been last 2 weeks of August staying off site so only getting fast passes at 30 days out and got the headliners.

Last year we stayed onsite so could get them from 60 days and even got the brand new Slinky Dog, not sure we would have got it at 30 days.

If you plan your days well you can manage fine, one day we had a pre-park opening breakfast at BOG so were in MK from 8am and had one about 10 things by lunch. There is a trick with fast passes that as soon as you have used one you change the time of the next to bring it forward as early as possible (we were doing this in the queue of current ride ready for the next), I'll try to find the YouTube video explaining it.

Nquartz · 25/05/2019 07:07

I can't find the original video (I have posted it on DIBB so it'll still be there somewhere!) but this explains it, I think:

Nquartz · 25/05/2019 07:08

Found it!

It really works, we did so many rides this way.

ChipsAreLife · 25/05/2019 07:12

We didn't stay onsite so could only book 30days out. We got slinky and flight of passage when we were out there as I kept checking!

WelshMoth · 25/05/2019 07:14

Really helpful thread! Thanks.
Off in August.
Does the unofficial guide have maps? I've been trying to get hold of some on eBay but no luck so far.

HermioneWeasley · 25/05/2019 08:42

welsh maps of the parks are available online for planning, and just pick them up as you go into the park, or if you go to guest services in one park, they’ll have maps for all the others.

If you want maps of the or,ando area, there’s lots on amazon

WelshMoth · 25/05/2019 10:12

Thanks Hermione - has a look and just bought them. I have to start deciding on my fast passes quite soon.

WelshMoth · 25/05/2019 10:13

*had

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 25/05/2019 21:51

Guys. This is really helpful. I had visions of us not getting on anything. Well not me as I don’t care for rides. But this makes me feel better.

If you are wanting to go to Universal, it's sometimes cheaper to get a room for 4 people at the hard rock for about £300 for one night. You will then get fast track for 2 days for 4 people. It's normally £80ish pp for fast track, so quite a large saving. You don't even actually need to stay in the hotel( if you have other accommodation) but you get benefits such as going to the park an hour before to see Harry Potter etc when it's quiet. And can use the pool if you fancy.

WelshMoth · 26/05/2019 08:00

Luckily, we're having 4 days at the Portofino.

I understand we'll get the equivalent of Fast Passes for there too and the youtube clips say it's more relaxed to use fast passes:express passes at Universal studios - lot less planning. Am I right? Will my tickets cover Islands of Adventure? DD's are Harry Potter fans and will want to see Hogwarts as well as Diagon Alley.

Itstheprinciple · 26/05/2019 09:03

Universal express passes are a lot easier - you just get in the express lane. You don't need to book anything or have a time slot.

PoptartPoptart · 26/05/2019 09:05

As long as you have the 2 park explorer tickets you can go between the IOA and Universal parks. They are a MUST if you are HP fans. The Hogwarts Express train goes between the two parks and they check your tickets before you get on to make sure you have the right ones.

Itstheprinciple · 26/05/2019 14:14

You will have an amazing time! I was sooo stressed before we went as I wanted to make sure we didn't miss out on anything we wanted to do but we had a brilliant time!

WelshMoth · 26/05/2019 16:42

Same, Principle.
I'm getting nervous and desperate for us to get it right. We're usually cheap camping in France for the summer so this is loads more of an expenditure - really want to enjoy!

Back to the travel agents this week because I have a few questions. My biggest concern at the moment is not knowing whether DH has booked park tickets - can't see them anywhere on the invoice.

HermioneWeasley · 26/05/2019 19:40

Staying at the universal hotels is great as you get early park access as well as the the universal express passes. Breakfast at the hotels can be expensive, but they might do a “per item” buffet where you can pay for just a bagel (or whatever), but still about $5! There’s a Starbucks and a Cinnabon at city walk, and lots of snacks in the parks.

You can walk from the hotels to the parks - takes about 10 mins.

Usually only one park is open for early access, so check which one you’re heading to (they are right next to each other)

It’s worth wearing lanyards with plastic wallets for your hotel room keys which you need to show for park access and can scanned in the express pass line.

Alot of universal rides require you to put a bag in a locker. Small lockers are free, but bigger ones cost a few dollars, so worth considering how big a bag you need.

Frozen butter beer is the nicer option IMO, but still super sweet, so only get one for the family.

Food options in Universal are not great. Mythos (islands) is genuinely good, but as a table service restaurant is a bit pricier. Leaky Cauldron (diagon alley in universal) is ok. At City Walk (the restaurants opposite the parks) we like Bubba Gump shrimp (but only good if you like seafood), and Cold Stone creamery for ice cream.
