Due to fantastic bit of good luck, DD and I (27 and 62) will be in Barcelona for 6 days mid July. We like heat, so no problem there. We have both "done" the CityBus tours, cable car over harbour, cathedral and Gaudi places about a decade ago. Hotel is walkable to the beach, so that's some sunbathing taken care of! However, money is really tight so could anyone suggest things to do / see for free please? We're happy to use public transport and walk about. Inexpensive evening eating place recommendations would be very welcome too.

This is pretty good - you pay what you think it was worth at the end www.neweuropetours.eu/sandemans-tours/barcelona/free-tour-of-barcelona/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwrJ7nBRD5ARIsAATMxssFg0cj-En8dw3anhCYKB05PwxP6VdtPPuo5LgXt63lrFW4N6RuqMwaAtcSEALw_wcB

Have you been to Hospital St Pau? Its absolutely amazing (I went there when it was still an actual hospital and was blown away) and not very expensive.

There is an amazing public open air swimming pool at Monjuic which has fabulous views over the city

I was there last week and loved the La Ribera area for wandering and spending lots of money window shopping in the lovely craft workshops. I can recommend La Peninsular in Barceloneta for excellent tapas (it's tiny so get there early or book) and Zodiaco bar at the bottom of Monjuic for cheap lunch plates.

Re transport, you can get a ticket for 10 journeys on the bus/metro and share it as long as you travel together. Cheaper than single journeys.

These restaurants were v good. V reasonable too for quality of food.

SWnewstart · 24/05/2019 12:43

OK thank you for all that info. Will definitely be getting the multi-ticket for sharing on bus/metro. Can you get to the open air pool at Montjuc using public transport? Hospital St Pau sounds interesting too. Any more such info / suggestions please?

You can get to Montjuc easily on public transport. We were there for a week (split between sightseeing and a music festival) and spent a lovely afternoon there.

You can also get out to Montserrat using public transport and I'd absolutely recommend a visit. Wear sturdy shoes if you're planning to explore around the church.

I know you've done the Sagrada but it has changed over the years so wouldn't discount a return visit.

When we were there a few years ago we had a good visit to the Museum of Modern Art but that will depend on exhibitions and your tastes!

We trekked up to the labyrinth park which was okay - I don't know if it was genuinely underwhelming or if we were too hot and in foul moods - it gets good reviews from others so it may just have been us!

I liked the rough round the edges feel to barceloneta and would have spent more time there.
