My Mam has found a lump

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 23/05/2019 18:03

My lovely gorgeous amazing mam has found a lumpy area in her breast a few weeks ago, she's only just told me today as she's been ignoring it due to being so worried.

Anyway she's phoning for a GP appointment in the morning to have it checked but I am absolutely beside myself with worry now. I'm imagining the worst and google is all doom and gloom.

Can anyone offer advice or a hand hold? She's 65 and has been post-menopausal for years. Last mammogram possibly last year was clear.

I'm a mess but trying to keep positive for my mam Sad

Flowers and strength to you and your DM.
Step away from google!!!
In my family we get our BC earlier, so I can't help with her age group.
Most lumps are benign.

MinnieMountain · 23/05/2019 19:12

As PP said, most lumps are benign.

It's standard to make sure the lump is checked at the hospital within 2 weeks of seeing the GP.

Sn0tnose · 23/05/2019 20:13

I know how scary this is and nothing will stop you worrying, but the chances are that it really is nothing to worry about. Women get lumps & bumps all the time and it usually turns out to be completely fine. Her gap will refer her for a mammogram and the appointment will come through really quickly so she’ll have an answer really quickly.

All of my lumps to date have been benign; I got very good service, mammograms and aspirations and biopsies but all good.

I have had this several times, hope your mum gets the reassurance I got.

MrsMozartMkII · 23/05/2019 20:28

No real useful words, just sending you both a handhold to get through this Flowers

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 23/05/2019 21:19

Thank you everyone means a lot to read those positive words

She's been referred under the two week wait to the breast clinic. More waiting

@WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream I am quite surprised at that as when I found a lump saw my GP and went to the clinic next day! Did her GP have a feel? X

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 24/05/2019 17:17

Yes GP felt it and did a choose and book referral, soonest appointment is 6th June

OP posts:
MinnieMountain · 24/05/2019 17:25

HJWT I expect most hospitals can't manage a next day referral unless the GP thinks it's urgent.

2 weeks has always been the norm for me.

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 06/06/2019 06:21

It's her hospital appointment today. 2.50pm. I feel sick already 😢

Hand hold OP. Most lumps are nothing.
Be prepared for lots of waiting. Our breast clinic does a mammogram, scan, needle biopsy and seeing the doctor all in one session.

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 06/06/2019 06:42

Thank you Minnie. Sounds like we could be there a while, I suppose it's better than having to keep going back. I'm just a bag of nerves imagining the worst.

Try not to panic. Over 90% of lumps referred are benign. And even if it's not, breast cancer treatments are great now. My mum was diagnosed in 1998. She's still going strong in 2019. My Nan has it in her 60s and died of something completely unrelated nearly 30 years later.

Deathraystare · 06/06/2019 07:21

The good thing is that she found it. I went and was told it was ok (I do have lumpy breasts anyway. Try not to worry, she will be in good hands!

Ohnotanothernamechange · 06/06/2019 07:57

I found a lump in February and was terrified. I was referred to the breast clinic straight away as this is standard procedure, I had an examination and was told straight away it was probably nothing (they can tell by the feel apparently). I had an Ultrasound and was told straight away it was a fibroadenoma, which is like a of lump of tissue. Core biopsy done to be certain, and a week later I was given the all clear.

Also all the women I was in the waiting room with were told they had nothing serious as well.

Thinking of you and your Mum today @WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream

spiderlight · 06/06/2019 15:32

Offering a handhold. Been through this with my mum in her 70s and she was fine - needed a lumpectomy but never had any further problems from it. I hope you've had good news by now. I remember how agonising all the waiting was.

SimplySteveRedux · 06/06/2019 16:03

I hope things go well and everything is dandy. I've recently been through a cancer scare and it's a harrowing experience. Best wishes for you and mum Thanks

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 06/06/2019 17:52

Thank you so much everyone for your kind words it really has been so helpful to me today. She's had a biopsy and we have to go back next week for the results. More waiting.

OP posts:
Ohnotanothernamechange · 06/06/2019 18:18

It's standard practice to go back for biopsy results OP so try not to worry.
