Tips for a nervous traveller

Going to Italy tonight! First time on a plane in about ten years. Completely anxious, not sure why! Just the sense of unfamiliarity I guess.

I suffer from ibs (see previous post) but that's actually not too bad at the moment. I just hate the whole travelling process and don't think I'll be fully at ease until we get there and get our bearings.

I know it's daft, someone give me a shake!!

Brew, nearest thing to a shake I could find ... Pour it over yourself and you'll be fine.

Top tip is to leave in plenty of time. Nothing worse than the stress of getting stuck in traffic on the way to the airport. Better to be there and get relaxed. Have a great holiday.

Yup. Leave on time.

If you haven't already packed, then make a list and cross things off as you pack. That way you can refer to the list when you have a last minute panic of "have I packed X".

In your head, go through the journey and holiday and make sure you have everything for each stage:

How are you getting to the airport? Do you need tickets/a reservation/money to pay for transport?

At the airport: passports, tickets etc.

Separate out any liquids/gels that will need to be in a plastic bag to go through xray.

Anticipate anything else that will need to be separate - ipad/laptop/kindle etc.

Have you got chargers and adaptor plug(s)?

Do you know how to get to the hotel from the airport? Do you have means to pay transport

etc. etc.

Walk it though, and make sure you have everything.

My best mantra is to make sure I have things that cannot be bought (passports, tickets, bank card, phone, medicines, glasses) and then say to myself, that anything else can be bought so no need to panic.

Last of all, ENJOY it! Italy is a lovely country.

DH is an awfully anxious traveller despite traveling frequently for work. What seems to help him is leaving plenty of time, having everything well sorted to get through security easier (toiletries in plastic bag, wearing slip on shoes, etc) and having ownership of the family's passports with name labels stuck on the front of each one.

also, don't overdress for travelling. I find I get hot and flustered and feel ten times worse.

If possible, take more in the suitcase rather than on you
