Hedgehog problem, any knowlegable people about?

My night camera has picked up a hedgehog visiting the hog feeding station several times a night in the last few days. He has an injured back leg, foot missing and a swollen stump, it's looking a bit better now though. I've just discovered that he's sleeping in the hog house at the bottom of the garden, so we've contacted the vets and the local wildlife centre, thinking they would be able to help him. They've both indicated however that in view of his injuries they thought euthanasia might be best, so bring him along. I've obviously been watching too much TV, I imagined they would operate.

I'm just not sure, he's getting about ok, his leg looks a bit better and he's eating really well. Would it be cruel to see how he goes? It feels wrong somehow to not give him a chance. I'm torn.

I've dealt with 'rescue' hedgehogs a bit in the past and generally vets have been pretty useless, I guess they've got a lot of other stuff on their plates...
My advice would be to Google and try to find a specific hedgehog rescue/hospital in your area then give them a ring- a lot have volunteers with secure gardens where disabled hogs can live out their lives safely.
Well done for caring and trying to help, hedgehog numbers are rapidly depleting (mainly because of humans) so it's really important to do what we can for them Smile

I had a hedgehog in my garden last summer out during the hottest part of the day and rang a hedgehog hospital for advice. They were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable.

I would try and get him some help. He might be getting around ok but he's probably in pain and it could become infected.

Dedicated hedgehog rescues are far better to contact than a regular vet. We have one in our town and she is amazing. Over winter she had over 70 hedgehogs in car due to them not achieving a certain weight or being injured.

Definitely try a wildlife rescue, they will do all they can

If you do put a hot water bottle in a cardboard box with a blanket over the top and then fold the blanket over him once he's in. That's the best way for them to travel I read somewhere...

I’m part of a hedgehog rescue charity. Everyones’s answer is spot on. I would say get the hog to a rescue who would liase with a vet to get the back leg checked out. Policy is only to euthanise if a front leg is lost, a hog can manage with a back leg missing.

CatsMother66 · 22/05/2019 21:25

Our charity vet goes above and beyond for hedgehogs brought in. Most other vets have little knowledge about hogs and are too busy to treat them.

If you google Mrs Tiggy Winkles Hedgehog Rescue it's near Aylesbury.

Not sure if it still holds true but British Rail used to transport hedgepigs free there (in a suitable box of course)

We've been in contact with a dedicated hedgehog place in Camberley, it's quite a difficult journey for us at present, but hope to take him/her tomorrow. Thank you everyone for your help.

Good luck

Oh bless you. Let us know how the little fella gets on 🤞

BlatheringOn · 22/05/2019 23:09

Well done! Where I live we haven't seen a hedgehog in years - I was discussing it with our neighbours yesterday - they seem to have vanished from our village.

MotherOfMinions · 23/05/2019 08:49

Good luck! Hope all goes well 🦔

Blathering- its worth putting down some food and water just in case a hedgehog passes through. They remember where they've found food and will come back. We have a little family at the moment that visit at around 10.30 every night. They eat a LOT of dry cat food.

Mollypolly2610 · 23/05/2019 23:52

My two wee hedgehogs. Excuse my garden grass! Their mother is bigger than next door’s cat!! I leave them water because she leaves cat food out and they eat that (she doesn’t let her cats indoors). I love the hedgehogs
