Jungle formula

dementedpixie · 22/05/2019 06:57

Something with DEET. I've used Tesco own make before

Stormwhale · 22/05/2019 06:57

A spray called midge. It's available on Amazon and we have found it to be hugely effective.

Livingthedream12345 · 22/05/2019 07:08

Citronella oil or the skin so soft lotion (blue one) from Avon.

ImpracticalCape · 22/05/2019 07:09

Anything with DEET
Jungle formula tropical strength
Bushman
Tbh I never buy in the UK and instead buy when there. The formula they sell in shops there will be best suited to your environment and the bigs they have.

Incognito (buy from Boots) is good for Europe and natural but needs plentiful reapplication every couple of hours.

Someone will come on and say Avon Skin So Soft 'the army use it'. Ignore them. It. Doesn't .Work.

TheCanterburyWhales · 22/05/2019 07:10

The extra strong one from Superdrug in a black and orange tin. Exactly same % of deet as Jungle formula but costs much less.
I'm in southern Italy and stock up on it when I come to the UK.

BonAccordSpur · 22/05/2019 07:13

Bushman Brand is the best we've ever used-they do a shit-strong 70%deet gel in a tube or a40%deet pump spray..also larger aerosol sizes..myDC are absolute sandfly/mossie magnets&live in tropics so apart from the covering up/light colours these work really great on the skin thats exposed(i wouldnt use the70%deet on face tho).

BringMeTea · 22/05/2019 07:32

Smidge is deet free but I used it recently in mozzy place and zero bites. Smells nice too.

babysharkah · 22/05/2019 07:38

They love me. The only thing that works is DEET.

3brightstars3 · 22/05/2019 08:15

Don't wait and buy there, there's no guarantee you will find some or some with deet.

Jungle formula is good but I got to eaten alive on holiday last year and each bite was really really swollen.

My advice is take antihistamines tablets and cream as well as deet sprays and cream.
And the room plug in things that stink but are great !!

Inforthelonghaul · 22/05/2019 08:21

The blue bottle of Nivea Lotion (just the basic one) has citronella in it too.

Todamhottoday · 22/05/2019 08:46

Take Jungle Formula with at least 50% deet in it. If you have a Home Bargain near by they often have it at the best price. The spray cans are better to use than the liquid, believe me I have tried them all.

Boots own brand really stings, Wilkos/Sainsburys own brand is useless, Avon SSS is also as much use as a chocolate teapot as well as vit B tabs and marmite and eating huge amounts of garlic as well as other old wives tales to rid the little buggers. Citronella in a spray form also IMO does not work, but the candles do help a little.

When you arrive try and either get plug ins or a room spray, which before you go out give the room a good spray close the doors. I would rather do that than suffer with mozzie bites.

I also do find the electric 'zappers' you can buy (Tesco) did work on some bites if you got then quick enough and took a bit of the sting down. But everyone reacts differently to bites.

Take care with clothing if you can covering up when its starting to go into dusk (but in certain areas mozzies etc are around all the time) you can also spry clothing, and watch those ankles, wrists and elbows a favorited place to be bitten

I lived in the tropics (one right next to a large jungle) and in other countrys with mozzie problems and sometimes I still got bit after very careful application, I also tried local sprays/lotions in different countries, the majority of which did not work as they are mainly produced for the local market, and I disagree they work better. One country I lived in all the western ex-pats were bitten to death using local stuff. Nasty nasty dengue carrying mozzies are not nice.

I like in Spain and the mosquitoes are insane. Big bastard tigers and they eat me alive.

I have tried most things in my time. The only stuff that works is Mossie Milk www.amazon.co.uk/Mosquito-Milk-Insect-Repellent-50Ml/dp/B001EJOHWI?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

and get an after bite pen in case any do get you. www.amazon.co.uk/After-Bite-Insect-Remedy-14ml/dp/B000KU919G?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

dementedpixie · 22/05/2019 14:43

Is that Mossie Milk good then? We're going to Costa Blanca at the end of June and I got bitten the last time we were there

Whatterly · 22/05/2019 15:05

Sorry that should have said I live in Spain.

It's fantastic. Nothing else comes close. I order it in from the UK because I haven't found a shop here that sells it. In 10 years of trying various things, it's the only thing that stops them.

DontCallMeShitley · 22/05/2019 18:22

Was going to say citronella oil of the Avon Skin so Soft but am a bit late so will second it and add this which is important.

Citronella oil needs to be a pure essential oil not a cheap version of perfumed oil or fragrance. It also needs to be mixed with a carrier oil and not used neat on the skin. You need just a few drops, and can buy mixer bottles from Ebay or essential oil type suppliers.
