DH and I have been asked to be Godparents to DH’s best friend’s DD. DH’s friend is our son’s Godfather, and got him a wonderful gift of a vintage port bond. DS has 2 cases of vintage wine from his birth year, which we will keep and age until he’s 21. This was significant gift, costing in the region of £900. Now, what on earth do we get his DD?? We were thinking maybe lifetime National Trust membership or something like that but that is in the region of £1500, a bit much. I’d like it to be something along those lines though – does anyone have any bright ideas?

The present for your ds was very generous but that doesn't mean you have to equal it. If you do you'll be setting yourself a president for future birthdays etc. I'd try and reign it in a bit, think of something really special that doesn't cost a fortune. One present we loved was vouchers for a family photo sitting.

What about jewellery? Not necessarily for now, but later? Or even just un-set gemstones (diamonds?) that she could have made into jewellery?

Or one of the charity gifts where you buy a family a goat/water pump/malaria nets?

I've had a look for alternatives to the National Trust idea but there doesn't seem to be anything cheaper. What about any museums or nature reserves around you?

Dds godmother gave her a lovely charm bracelet then on the anniversary of her christening each year gets her a charm

She always picks really special ones that symbolise something dd has done that year like ballet shoes for her first dance show, apple for starting school etc

Diamond or birthstone and diamond pendant.
Classic, timeless, could be made into a different setting later.

I had an antique silver boxed cutlery set - I still love it. I did buy something similar for a friend and I know they hated it!

Thank you so much for the tips! We got her an emerald necklace (her birthstone).
