Can anyone decipher this Welsh farm name on an old census ?

I am used to looking at census returns as I am doing my family tree, but I just can’t work out what this says. The farm name, not the people’s names.

Is there meant to be a picture here?

SirVixofVixHall · 20/05/2019 19:56

Doh! I am an idiot ( very tired, broken night ). I forgot to add the image.. here it is.

This is what happens when I get woken by a child at five am. I am middle aged, my brain can’t cope.

They’re not very clear are they?

What area of Wales is it?

SirVixofVixHall · 20/05/2019 20:03

Pembrokeshire, near Mathry. I am trying to find a clearish map of the period.

Lochturffin? Has some hits for holiday cottages near Mathry

Submariner · 20/05/2019 20:09

Google hits, sorry. I googled what I thought it looked like and that's what Google suggested.

SecretNutellaFix · 20/05/2019 20:10

Looks like LochTurffin.

SirVixofVixHall · 20/05/2019 20:14

Hmm, yes Submariner that does look possible doesn’t it? I am trying to find it on another census in the hope of clearer handwriting, but spelling is often all over the place on Welsh censuses.

Yes I think it really must be that, I have looked at the surrounding area, and the other holiday cottages and it seems to fit. It is not an obvious name in Welsh, I can’t make sense of it, so my mind couldn’t process it.

I'm going with Lochturffin too (ex-archivist here). I've checked out 'Historic Parishes of England and Wales' (available online via the GENUKI site) and it lists Lochturffin as a farm or other place in the parish of Mathry:

www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/PEM/Mathry

Historydweeb · 20/05/2019 20:28

It's not far from me. Showing on the OS map of 1888 and it also shows a 'lochturrfin' cross just south of the farm. It's south of Mathry just before the main village. Will try and attach screengrabs

@misselizabennett I was just about to link that :) beat me to it. I love that site.

MissElizaBennett · 20/05/2019 20:38

@Historydweeb it's fab, isn't it. Have spent many hours on there trying to identify place names mentioned in various old documents and letters!

SirVixofVixHall · 20/05/2019 20:41

Oh you are all so fab! Thank you. I was driving round Mathry the other day, but hadn’t seen the census then.
It is depressing just how many places my ancestors lived are now holiday homes though. 😢

Thanks for the map link Historydweeb , the old map I was browsing online didn’t enlarge with clear type. Also hello fellow Pembs person ! *waves

On the census there is only one F, a different alphabet letter in Welsh to ff.
But then I have seen Ysgybor written as Skibor on a census.

I grew up in that area, so it seemed familiar to me.

SirVixofVixHall · 20/05/2019 22:11

You moved away Nutella?

Historydweeb · 20/05/2019 22:14

Lots of Welsh! Yay!! It's in the north of the county but I'm happy to do a little stakeout drive by if you need any pictures at some point soon. I often have a potter around St Davids

SecretNutellaFix · 20/05/2019 22:35

Moved to Fishguard when I was 10 because dad was ill, then to Bridgend area when I was 22.

SirVixofVixHall · 21/05/2019 11:21

Thanks History my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather was from St Davids. There is a headstone in the cathedral grounds that always gives me pause for thought, it says something along the lines of
Think of me as you pass by
As you are now, so once was I
As I am now soon you will be
Prepare for death, and follow me

!!!
I am further North in the county.
