Do you use or have you tried multifocall contact lenses?

Just that really. I wear varifocal glasses at the moment and normal contacts now and again. I just thought I’d like to try wearing the multifocals lenses instead of glasses for a longer period of time instead? I’m keen to get the opinions of anyone who uses them?

Had them for years. Stopped wearing contacts for a while, but have started again because glasses are hopeless when you’re exercising.

I’ve had dailies, monthly, fortnightly at various times.

I tried them and quite liked them, they are better than the glasses, which I hated. I found close reading was an issue though. I think I would like to try them again, when I get round to going to the opticians again.

Love mine. Couldn't get used to glasses.

I'm increasingly having an issue with close reading, and I also find I can't rely on them for driving in the dark so have to keep a pair of glasses and lens case in the car. But generally, it's great being able to see everything.

That’s interesting thanks. Yes I drive so I was wondering about that side of it, although not every day and very rarely at night.

I tried them but couldn't focus close enough for reading, knitting and sewing.

Smallfacesfan · 20/05/2019 18:18

Yes, it’s the reading and close up thing I was concerned about. Think I’ll ask the optician for one months supply to see how I get on with them.

I take my lenses out when I'm reading or knitting. It's more of an issue if I'm in meetings and having to pore over legal documents.

I've had a good 10 years or so of varifocal lenses though. It's quite recent that I've noticed it's getting more difficult. The optician suggests ready readers but I haven't found any that actually do make close work easy while wearing lenses.

Fireinthegrate · 20/05/2019 18:44

I’ve tried them twice and not got on with them.
If they get the lens right for distance I still can’t read, and if they get it right for reading then distance isn’t good enough. Something about my prescription means they can’t get it quite right.

Also, while trialling them I walked around a supermarket but found myself getting dizzy when looking around.

I would love to have them as I wear contacts for distance but now have to add reading glasses for near stuff ☹️

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 20/05/2019 18:50

there's lots of choice so if you and your optician are serious then you might be in for a long haul of trialling different types for fit, comfort and power balance

I have tied all sorts and the only ones that gave me half decent vision were MarkEnvoy lenses, absolutely excellent for distance even in low light, which is why i gave up on all the others, ....driving at night was just plain dangerous
They are pretty much the equivalent of the tailor made varifocal spectacle lenses. pricey

but the close could have been better....okay for shopping, menus, computer, phone, but not that good for instruction on packets or crochet/crafts

Smallfacesfan · 20/05/2019 19:05

Certainly food for thought there. Don’t really fancy months of trialling various lenses only to end up having to use glasses for reading or distance. That just defeats the whole idea.

some folks like and get on really well with mono vision, one eye is corrected for distance and the other for close.

it's dropping out of favour as it's not supposed to be good for your depth perception, plus multifocal lenses are really coming on but there's lots out there still getting on well with it

depending on your prescription and skill of your optom there might not be too much faff, I have very high astigmatism as well as being a -7.75, so that limits my options right from the get go, and I also worked in a opticians, so got to be a guinea pig for lots of baby optoms! :o

How about just distance contacts and a pair of simple readers over the top? Gets you out of your specs mostly! :o

drspouse · 20/05/2019 19:25

I have monovision which is a bit different, but I love them.

I think my depth perception was shot anyway!

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 20/05/2019 19:49

i fell into mono vision with a previous pair of specs, my left eye decided to go a bit rogue and get much more short sighted, so was effectively a reading lens for left and distance for right.

that was a bugger going back to proper distance right and left.

I might give mono vision a go again with lenses, then I can have the more comfortable single vision lenses, instead of the multifocals that I am not supposed to wear for more than 10 hours.
