Oh the 48 hour rule is a pile of nonsense...!

No its not...!!!!!!

I've been ill for the past 2 weeks after one of my swimming lessons...

Sample sent to the lab today and we are almost absolutely positive its cryptosporidium.

That I got at the swimming pool because someone had been swimming that shouldn't have gone.

So

I've been signed off work as I'm a public health hazard (I work in a primary school) - that'll literally mean kids not being given support and input this week.
I've had 2 weeks of illness
I'm not allowed to swim or go to help at my brownies unit
Someone has to lovely job of analysing the water-y nonsense that I've been passing 8 - 10 times daily this past few weeks/
I'll need to take meds when its confirmed.
Environmental health will need to be informed, check the pool possibly leading to a closure while its cleaned - cancelling public sessions, swimming lessons, school lessons...

All because either an adult or a child went swimming when they shouldn't have.

Please please pay attention to the 48 hour rule.

The fact that people don't pay attention to it gives me the absolute rage! So selfish and irresponsible! I'm so sorry you're so unwell. If only it was possible to find out what selfish twat was responsible...

RosaWaiting · 20/05/2019 17:07

sorry to hear this OP

yes the people ignoring the rule are so selfish and - actually that's the wrong word, it's way worse than being selfish.

maybe a day will come that we can track them!

fairweathercyclist · 20/05/2019 17:13

They may have gone swimming before they knew they were ill.

And you can catch it by more than one means - eg visiting lambs.

I hope you feel better very soon and I hope that someone didn't go swimming when they knew they had it, but I imagine they'd feel too ill to go in that case.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 20/05/2019 17:35

I definitely got it at the swimming pool.

I swim at the pool.

I don’t cuddle lambs.

My biggest pet peeve is people not adhering to the 48 hour rule. It is beyond selfish. I know it’s a nuisance, but it will be a nuisance for all of the people that get infected as a result of it being ignored too. These things would spread far less of everyone followed it and there would be less school and work absences as a result. Just the other day a kid was sent back into school 24 hours earlier than he should have been. He promptly puked everywhere, putting all the other kids and staff at risk of catching something that they could probably have avoided.

Jacqattacq · 20/05/2019 17:55

I completely forgot to say that I hope you feel better soon, OP. That sounds really miserable.

YorkshireIndie · 20/05/2019 18:13

Environmental Health will not close the pool just because of you. They will look to see if there are other cases. Most pools have a UV filter to destroy crypto but it is a complete ball ache that people do not adhere to the 48hr rule

Ratatatouille · 20/05/2019 18:18

People are arseholes. We used to go to a playgroup where one little girl was receiving treatment for cancer. All the parents knew this. We were constantly reminded to please not attend playgroup if we had bugs or colds etc. And yet every damn week some idiot would turn up with their snotty child or "oh it's been 24 hours since he last projectile vomitted so I'm sure it's fine". Literally the little girl could have died as a result and still people thought that their right to have a cup of tea and a chat while little Johnny trashes the village hall trumped that.

slipperywhensparticus · 20/05/2019 18:21

Isnt it 7 days for swimming? Our school has a rule you can come back after 48 hours but not use the pool for a week

Littlebelina · 20/05/2019 18:26

I thought it was longer for swimming as well slippery

RedTitsMcGinty · 20/05/2019 23:26

I’ve had crypto. I was barred from all swimming pools in my area for two weeks: the Council sent me a letter to say so.

Littlebird88 · 20/05/2019 23:29

oh jeez I complelty agree.
I caught crypto a few years ago. awful.

terriblyangryattimes · 20/05/2019 23:39

Poor you, its horrific. My son caught it at a petting farm last Easter and he was ill for the whole Easter holidays along with a lot of other kids locally who had been taken their by their family or schools. Of course the rest of us caught and we all stayed indoors all holidays driving each other mad for fear of taking it outside and infecting people.i would have dreamt of going to a public pool! People just don't think. Feel better soon

EBearhug · 20/05/2019 23:59

Our pool has recent signs up saying you shouldn't swim for two weeks after a bout of diarrhoea.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 21/05/2019 07:35

Oh great - I'll forget how to swim in that time....bum.

OP posts:
Sweetpotatoaddict · 21/05/2019 07:37

It’s a two week rule for swimming not 48hrs, specifically to target crypto which isn’t killed by chlorine in the pool.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 21/05/2019 07:43

I wish employers respected the 48 rule more too. My sister works in a nursery and management have told her 24 hours is fine because they're so short staffed. It's just stupid.

However the scenario Ratatatouille mentions is a bit different I think. I really feel sorry for the little girl but is it realistic to keep "snotty toddlers" off playgroup all the time? D&v absolutely but my DS had a snotty cold for months at a time, I'd have never left the house if we had to avoid playgroup. I don't know which way I feel about that becasue obviously the little girl deserved to go to playgroup too.
