Chicken pox at children’s centre?

Brought 5mo DD round today and a sign was posted they’d had a chicken pox case. Would you bring your small baby in? She is EBF but i thought she shouldn’t be exposed before one year?

I think I would?

LL83 · 20/05/2019 16:48

I think it is good they have put up sign as it is useful to those who really want to avoid it.
I would go in if it was something we really wanted/needed to go to unless I was due to travel, had a special occasion approaching, or had close family with a weakened immune system.

Is it for child care or is it a place just to play? I wouldn't want to expose a 5 month old to it. If they get it under 1 year they may not get full immunity or they can be at higher risk of childhood shingles

Thank you, no one home with immune problems but thought she would be too young to be exposed-rather that it would be more risky? Wasn’t urgent (just popped round for rhyme tyme) and felt uncomfortable. Did see loads of other babies going in and out, some much smaller than DD.

Thank you dementedpixie-yes thought I’d heard something about shingles risk but don’t see it on the NHS page. Also risk for meningitis?

My ds had chicken pox at almost 6 months and shingles at age 3

Passthecherrycoke · 20/05/2019 17:00

I don’t quite get it, I don’t think they mean there is a live infected person with chicken pox in the building, just that they’ve had one. I imagine the sign is to warn people who were at the centre ie last week that a child who attended has since come down with CP. I can’t imagine it’s a current threat?

LIZS · 20/05/2019 17:05

Sureky the ship has sailed. The child has cp and eould have been infectious beforehand, so either your dd was in contact then or not, and is already incubating it or not.

www.urmc.rochester.edu/encyclopedia/content.aspx?ContentTypeID=90&ContentID=P02551 this says about increased shingles risk if they have chicken pox under 1 year

Drogosnextwife · 20/05/2019 17:16

Now don't take my word for this but I've heard that babies carry their mothers immunity to chicken pox for the first few months or up to a year. That could be absolute rubbish, but I've never had a case of chicken pox in a baby and I look after children for a living.

dementedpixie · 20/05/2019 17:26

www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/childrens-health/how-long-do-babies-carry-their-mothers-immunity/ this talks about passive immunity but it doesn't last more than a few weeks/ months but can be prolonged by breastfeeding
