Why oh why do I keep flipping stalling my car!?

I passed 8 weeks ish ago. Didn't really stall the instructors car too often. When I did his advice was that I wasn't putting enough gas on. Been driving my car since I passed, and keep stalling the thing at massive roundabouts, at junctions, at lights on hills. It's a bloody pain! I feel like I'm lifting the clutch slowly enough and putting enough gas on but obviously I'm bloody well not.

I need tips! I took my new driver plates off but I think I should put them back on until I sort this.

Anyone wants to tell me I'm not ready for the roads or shouldn't be driving, just leave it. I passed with 1 minor and took 60 hours or lessons in all. I'm in my mid 30s and am a confident driver otherwise. If you don't think I'm ready for the roads, tell me how I can actually rectify this now...

Keep the radio off, and listen to the engine noise. Try and learn how the engine feels through the accelerator pedal and into your foot. Use that as an indicator of whether you are using enough gas. And look at the rev counter and get used to how many revs you need, but most of all, listen and feel.

I don't think it had a clever clutch though... Hmm, not sure...

All I mean by a clever clutch is you can pretty much just ease off the clutch without pressing down on the gas at all and it still doesn't stall. All new cars I've driven (I drive a lot for work in hire cars) have this feature.

My car is 9 years old now and isn't as sensitive as it's predecessor on the biting point but isn't quite in the territory of being stall-proof. It's only a small difference but it can catch you out if you aren't used to it.

Do you have an electronic handbrake or do you need to pull it on? Even our mechanic got caught out driving our newish car which sometimes decides to cut the engine to save fuel at lights etc. It depends what setting the buttons are all on. Just took a little getting used to.

I've got a 58 plate, it's just a normal handbrake

I also wouldn't wear Birkenstocks to drive - I know someone who had a very nasty accident caused by getting their sandal' s sole trapped under the pedal. I never wear sandals for driving.

Yes, I think that's good advice. I'll keep a pair of shoes in the car I think like a PP said. Not worth the risk is it!

My dad took us up on to the (very quiet) hill behind our village and made us do (what felt like) hundreds of hill starts just moving the car gently up the hill. Once you're clear exactly where to find the biting point you'll rarely stall again. It's not really a great thing to sit on a clutch at lights etc but you'll rarely stall again.
