Airbnb host looking fir £100 extra

In February I booked an apartment in Madrid for a family occasion. Now it happens to correspond to the Champions League Final weekend. I knew this when booking but had no choice in the dates.

The host has now come back to me yesterday asking for an additional £100 because they say an administrative error on their part neglected to increase the prices because of the final.
I’ve called Airbnb and they say that of the host cancels they fine them (I think it’s something like £50/£100). They will try to help me get alternative accommodation- fat chance at this stage.

If I don’t pay this and refuse to cancel - can the host cancel and then rent out the apartment on those dates anyway?

Duster
You know when you have to choose between two tops, you really don’t know which you prefer and you ask your partner for his opinion. Once he chooses it brings clarity to what you actually want. Well...

If it's cancelled at his request then he won't be able to let it.
Bear in mind they don't sanction for the first cancellation so he may not get a financial penalty but it will stay on his record for a year, showing in his reviews and also preventing him from getting superhost.

This is all very weird.

I had this with an AirBNB I booked in Miami, although they give me no option to pay extra. I booked months in advance and then 2 weeks before I was due to arrive, they cancelled on me. I later discovered that my dates happened to coincide with the Miami Open so I think we know exactly why they cancelled but there was nothing I could do. All the decent properties were booked up and I ended up paying a lot more for a hotel room instead (who were lovely and upgraded me for free to a penthouse suite so karma I guess - thank you Mondrian Miami!!!).

Not sure about Airbnb but I'd make them cancel.

I had similar with a booking on Booking.com. Apartment kept asking me to cancel but i didn't want to because it didn't feel right. I insisted that they use Booking.com processes and that they cancel if they wanted to.

Glad that I did because Booking.com found me an alternative apartment which was about £60 a night more and then they covered the difference. Charged it to the original apartment owners I think, which is why they had asked me to cancel....

I'm finding this thread more interesting than I should Grin

I'd be tempted to contact AirBnb and tell them what's happening. Make them sort it out with the host so they know what they're up to.

Thanks Code

Sorry to hear others have been through it too.

Smart I’ve sent the queries to Airbnb this morning but no response so hence asking the collective wisdom of mumsnet Smile
