What action would you take for this injury?

Yesterday, DS (8) was playing goal keeper for his local team when he fell a bit strangely during a save. I didn’t see it; DH was there. They stopped play whilst the coaches and DH checked to see if he was ok. He was determined to keep playing and said he was fine. Yesterday afternoon he said to me it was aching a bit, and could he have an ice pack? He was fine at bedtime and refused offers of painkillers, saying it was ok now.

Just got a call from the school and they said at lunchtime he had been playing football again (all his team mates are also in his class) and had caught a ball awkwardly. The secretary/nurse there knows him well and said he acted really out of character; normally he brushes himself off but this time he really was upset and cried and asked for ice. He did say he wanted to go back to class because he wanted to work on a project this afternoon. Secretary called me because it had played on her mind over how unusual it was for him.

There is no swelling, both yesterday and today. The wrist does not feel hot, or appear red. It only aches. Do I present my DS for an X-ray at the local hospital, or leave it a few more days?

I ask because a few weeks ago there was an email sent home about chicken pox... that day DS came home with a couple of red itchy lumps on his back. I’m embarrassed to say I rang the GP and asked for him to be seen rather than waiting and watching... only for it to turn out to be insect bites Blush I don’t want to jump the gun again. What would you do?

I would get an x Ray. Children can be very stoic and the earlier the better if treatment is needed

moreismore · 20/05/2019 13:41

I’d go via minor injuries btw

ziggiestardust · 20/05/2019 13:43

Is minor injuries likely to be at the local hospital along with the a&e? I’ve only lived in this area a few years and never been (knock on wood!)

I just... don’t want to waste anyone’s time. I really felt embarrassed over the chicken pox thing.

Can you ring the GP? 111? Google a minor injuries and see if they do xrays?

moreismore · 20/05/2019 13:51

I would google and should come up. You aren’t wasting anyone’s time, you can’t know when these things will happen! You definitely don’t want to leave him with an undiagnosed fracture because you were feeling too British Wink

BarbaraofSevillle · 20/05/2019 13:58

I'd suggest the minor injuries clinic, where they may X-ray. Children his age can suffer green stick fractures, which are partial fractures of soft bones, like if you bend a soft twig - a green stick.

Look on the nhs website for details of local services. It might be at one of your local hospitals or a separate centre.

GoGoJo · 20/05/2019 13:59

Does he have generalised pain or specific pain over a certain area?

Could be a scaphoid fracture- they are often missed as don't swell much.

ziggiestardust · 20/05/2019 14:09

It’s pain over a specific area; running up the same side of the wrist as the thumb, perhaps 1/3 of the way up between wrist and elbow.

I would. My daughter broke her wrist once doing handstands. She carried on doing handstands but when she still complained of pain a couple of days later I took her in.

The hospital were not impressed with me not taking her straight in though. Apparently bairns can get freaky fractures and still carry on using the limb.

bengalcat · 20/05/2019 14:13

A and E or a minor injuries unit

Millie2018 · 20/05/2019 14:17

Yes, get an X Ray. Don’t worry about the chicken pox incident, we’ve all done it! Best intentions and all that.

elaine26 · 20/05/2019 14:50

My DD fell at school and hurt her wrist, it wasn't swollen and she could move her fingers, I took her to A&E later that night, she was x-rayed and it was broken. I wouldn't wait, I'd take him to A&E today

Atalune · 20/05/2019 15:29

Minor injuries will be at a different location to a and e if you have one. Google it for your local area.

I would go to minor injuries too.

GoGoJo · 21/05/2019 08:18

Yeah specific pain in a spot I would take him. Let us know what they say.

notapizzaeater · 21/05/2019 08:21

If it's out of character for him I'd def take him just to checked out.

Khara · 21/05/2019 08:29

My daughter broke her arm - also a goalkeeping injury - and continued doing everything for a week (including going on monkey bars) until we took her to a&e!

AlwaysCheddar · 21/05/2019 08:38

x-ray definitely!

Bumply · 21/05/2019 12:45

Had something similar with DS2.
He texted me while I was at work to say he thought he might have broken his risk.
I but of a dramatic statement based on what had actually happened which was his hand bent back trying to save a football whilst in goal.
I would have done watch and wait but he had a take of a friend with similar injury which did turn out to be broken.
So I stopped work and took him to a&e to be checked. Waited for hours to be told it was only a bad sprain, but he did get a hand splint which took a lot of the discomfort out and protected it whilst it recovered.
It's a difficult one as I didn't know enough to be sure if it was serious, mild or total time waster, but I'm glad I took him to be checked.
