Looking to get the train to Liverpool in August, £162.50 each (peak) or £88.20 each (off peak) No wonder our roads are clogged with cars! Sad

Or I can drive at it will cost about £30 in fuel and £20 in parking.

Is this for real? Or am I looking for train tickets in the wrong way/place?

Yes it's cheaper to drive but unless you have a hybrid it will be more than 1/2 a tank fuel from London to Liverpool

Train fares our ridiculous. I used to come to the UK for work - last minute trip. When I put in my claim for train fare London to Leicester they didn't believe it could cost that much!

StealthPolarBear I have just signed up for the free trail on this website, you put in your location and roughly the area you want to go and they send notifications.........not sure if anything will come of it.

Catch the megabus! It's about £5 each way , each if you book now!

StealthPolarBear · 20/05/2019 14:40

Thank you both, really helpful. Just to be awkward I'd prefer to go from teesside (flying) but a short break in Amsterdam was about £800 for flights alone

InspirationUnavailable · 20/05/2019 14:46

@stealthpolarbear unfortunately I find deals tend to be better from the slightly larger airports. Eg we always seem to get better deals from Manchester than Leeds Bradford.

Celeriacacaca · 20/05/2019 15:03

Looking up fares to take DS on uni visits - £725 on one train to Wales from London. To Cornwall £400+ return.

We'll be driving which is a shame as I love going by train.

Used to pay £42 for the four of us with friend and family card to Wales when kids were smaller.

elsabadogigante · 20/05/2019 15:18

I never bother even looking at trains anymore. A whole lot of faff and then it's still rarely if ever cheaper than driving, plus you have to worry about the timetable, cancellations, when they cancel your seat bookings. It's a joke.

220 miles?

I get between 450 and 500 miles to a tank and I don’t drive a hybrid.

cestlavielife · 20/05/2019 16:04

Celeriac get a two together railcard and book advance saver tickets
London to Cardiff with dd was some thing like 50 for both return

mummmy2017 · 20/05/2019 16:06

Check mega bus.... Sometimes they are much cheaper, but take the same time.

Titsywoo · 20/05/2019 16:08

I have a railcard and book through the train line website. Much cheaper!

goose1964 · 20/05/2019 16:12

Sometimes 2 singles are cheaper than two returns

goose1964 · 20/05/2019 16:13

*one return

Thanks for the suggestions re: coaches, however, I've already mentioned up thread that it wouldn't work for me. Plus I get ridiculously sick on a coach, just the smell of them is enough to set me off.

Try splitticketing.com
I saved £36 on a return for 2 to London in June with a two together railcard compared to the exactly same journey on trainline. It also helps to buy specific trains, so the 8.29am from Crewe for instance rather than an anytime return. Virgin are always faster and more comfortable than London West Midlands (they have a shop on board for hot drinks and usually are either straight through or just a couple of stops) but are usually a bit more expensive.

mummmy2017 · 20/05/2019 17:44

If it is so much cheaper to drive, can you just find a park and ride and take, bus or tram into the town.

Nikhedonia · 20/05/2019 20:52

@mummmy2017 it's not the cost of parking, it's the fact that I'd rather get the train. I drive a lot so it's nice not to sometimes. I'd also rather be a bit more environmentally friendly.
