And did you buy a piece of art from there? I'm wondering how many people have got a similar painting to me as think a lot of their paintings are don't over and over again. Mine is of a bus in Kowloon. I was just looking at it and thinking how many thousands they must sell a year to tourists!

I have been to the ladies market loads of times but never got any art. Have you got a photo of your art?

Yes, thirty years ago, Stanley Market. Sadly we got stopped coming through customs at Heathrow and got hit with a massive fine!

buttyblahblah · 20/05/2019 08:27

Yes! We went on honeymooon 15 years ago and bought this from one of the the night markets in Kowloon;

That's the one @buttyblahblah !! Mine is slightly different tones but just the same. I don't have a photo of it as my blooming camera has broken on my phone 😡

Did you get yours framed back in uk? I think our framing cost approx 10000x more than the painting!

Yours looks lovely! We've just moved house and I'm trying to find the right spot for ours

Yes we had it framed back here and it did cost a fortune compared to the painting.

I still love it, it reminds me of an amazing holiday.

SquishySquirmy · 20/05/2019 09:18

Yes, Stanley market and bought a couple v. Similar to the one posted above!
Price was very cheap though, I knew when I bought it that it wasn't unique but neither is a print, so I just thought of it that way.
I framed them myself (drawing pins, a cheap canvas frame and a box frame from hobby craft), no glass and they look fab on my wall, and remind me of a great holiday!
I've also bought canvases from Paris street stalls which are similarly mass painted (the same Parisian scene in the same style painted over and over). Again , I don't kid myself that it's original art but I don't care. I like it.

If you do want something more original but still affordable, try art and craft fairs in the UK- I've bought lino prints from unknown artists for not very much money at all, they can be lovely and still fairly unique!

Scion457 · 20/05/2019 09:48

Yes, we’ve got one very similar. When I took it to be framed the chap said they’re mass produced, literally on a production line-one person paints a small section with one colour then passes it along until the whole picture is complete.

Shitsandgigglez · 20/05/2019 12:14

Ah is that how it works @Scion457

They must get so bored painting the same thing over and over again.

I do love mine and no it's not original art but it is an actual painting rather than a print and as PPs have said it's a great holiday souvenir to remind me of a fun trip

I live in Hong Kong, and that's definitely a popular one at Stanley and the Ladies Market - in fact my in-laws have one exactly the same as the one @buttyblahblah shared!

Art is such a subjective thing, and I reckon the most important thing is to really like it - after all, it's hanging on your wall! If you love it, and it reminds you of happy memories, then that's definitely the most important thing.

A lot of the artwork for sale here comes from Dafen Art Village, which is just across the border in Shenzhen - it's an incredible place, just full of countless small studios with artists producing everything from Old Masters to Hockneys! They also produce original artwork and can recreate portraits from photos. I would highly recommend it as a day trip for anyone visiting HK.

QueenKong101 · 20/05/2019 12:26

As a (know-it-all) side note, that's not a bus! It's a tram - they run along the North side of Hong Kong Island, so it's definitely not meant to be Kowloon!

Shitsandgigglez · 20/05/2019 12:33

@QueenKong101 sorry yes - tram! It's been years since I've been but not sure why I thought it was Kowloon. I bet it's great living in HK. I'd love to go back some day

I love it here @Shitsandgigglez! Apart from the typhoons. And the humidity. And the cost of rent...Grin

Shitsandgigglez · 20/05/2019 17:33

@QueenKong101 ah yes I'd imagine it's expensive! So fun and vibrant though!
