How long after surgery can you soak in a bath?

I know it can depends on lots of things...i have gallbladder-removal wounds, which were glued (any maybe a few steri-strips -hard to tell, and they told me nothing!)
It's been a week and I've had showers, but don't know when it's ok to have a full-on normal bath. Tried asking hospital and they were vague... Anyone knowledgeable with clear info on whether I might re-open something?!

Thanks!

I don’t want to sound unkind but this is really not one for MN or any other similar forum. This is one for your own medics, who know your own medical history. Please, do the right thing.

Questionsquestionsquestions · 20/05/2019 07:51

Thank you -hard to know what the right thing is though, as I don't want to waste gp time making an appointment just to ask if I can have a bath!
And as I said, I asked the hospital who were vague and said it depended on what was on the wounds -so if they can't tell me, I'm struggling to to see who 'my own medics' are that I can ask!
I was just wondering if others had had similar experiences, and what they had done.

It really does depend on the wound op which is probably why you are not getting any straight answers. A doctor or nurse needs to assess it for you before they can say. I had a 4 × 4 full hysterectomy earlier in the year, leaving me with 4 puncture wounds from the keyhole surgery. They all healed fine after about a week to 10 days, except one which refused to dry out. Had to clean it with alcohol after showering and wasn't allowed to bath for a good while, until it was totally healed, which took about a month in total. HTH! I love baths so understand your frustration!

Thank you -so it's not unreasonable to make an appointment just for them to look at them and tell me? There is no routine follow up appt, so no plan for anyone to be checking how they're healing it anything like that, so otherwise I have no way of knowing when it's ok.
Just feels a bit wrong to be having an appointment just for that! Blush

Could you ask to see the practice nurse at your surgery for reassurance?

It's normally 7 to 10 days after surgery, all looking well with your wound site.

With my c-section I was told to wait 6 weeks...

Processedpea · 20/05/2019 12:33

I waited about 2 days after my gallbladder op. The hospiral gave me some mepore dressings and I bought some from eBay too. I used the bath to weaken the dressings so I could change them.

Processedpea · 20/05/2019 12:36

Dud you have keyhole surgery? I didn't wait 6 weeks for my c section bath either. I think baths really help with healing more than a shower would? Doesn't that splash everywhere?

Effy1990 · 20/05/2019 12:42

I had a c section earlier this year and had to have a bath. I waited just having strip washes until I saw the midwife at 5 days to check the dressing could come off (I don't have a shower) and asked her . She said no bubbles or long soaking until after the 6-8 week check but I could bath.

However my previous c section only 18 months earlier I was told not to have one until after the 6-8 week check. So I think it depends on your facilities and how you are healing.

When you can have bubbles get some badedas as it's magic after any surgery

madcatladyforever · 20/05/2019 12:48

Stitches take 10 days to heal properly as a rule of thumb so I'd probably give it at least that.

Questionsquestionsquestions · 21/05/2019 09:50

Thanks all -will see if I can get a nurse appointment.
No dressings on it that would need changing. And I had C-sections too -can't remember anything about baths though, as it was a while ago! I don't remember pining after one though...Grin

I have just my first keyhole surgery for endometriosis and I had dissolvable stitches put in.. the surgeon said if stitches are still there come week four take a bath and pull the remainder out yourself. So does that mean that I'm not able to bath till then?
