Extended wear contact lenses, anyone use them?

Going back to contacts, ( haven't worn them for a couple of years??!) and have been looking at the various options available now.

Saw extended wear , wear all day and night for 30 days and then swap out for a fresh set.

I've done a quick Mumsnet search and the threads are all fairly old, so was wondering if anyone has any newer experience?
Assuming quality etc will be more improved now?

Ah yes mine are just monthlies but i’s Still check that price as it seems super expensive.

I’ve had mine for 15 years and love them. My optician said they are better than dailies because they let more oxygen through.

Mari50 · 19/05/2019 23:00

@FeedMeWell your optician doesn’t sell very good dailies then. They aren’t better than dailies, they don’t let more oxygen through than dailies made of the same material (which are commonly available) and the extended wear modality has the highest risk of bacterial keratitis. So if I were you I’d find an optometrist who knows what they’re talking about.

I used to wear weeklies, but blood vessel over growth means I can't now wear contacts at all. I think they've improved, but you need to be careful. The longer you leave them in, the higher the risk of infection going unnoticed.

I wear the extended use ones, previous optician recommended them given my pattern of wearing dailies every day and longer hours than recommended (I don’t sleep much),

The last 2 opticians I have seen (same practice) have both agreed that while they don’t like them, the6 sui5 me and my eyes are currently very healthy.

I've had extended wear for about 15 years. My current optician doesn't really like me having them at all, but has to admit that my eyes are completely healthy at each six-month check-up. I've got a fairly strong prescription (-7.5 and -7.0) so to be able to see straight away when I wake up is bliss. I do try and remember to have a night without them once a week, but it doesn't always happen.

I have worn them for 10 years. Always take them out on a Saturday and clean in peroxide overnight. Absolutely no problems and love them . I always have dailies on stand by as sometimes I have a dirty job and like to be able to bin them. I think as long as you are sensible and your eye hygiene is meticulous they are fine.

ItStartedWithAKiss241 · 20/05/2019 07:51

I use weeklies and sleep in them so wear them constantly for the week. Been checked by optician lots of times and no scarring x

Modern silicon hydrogels allow plenty of oxygen to the eyes, so complications from lack of oxygen are no longer an issue.

However, if you sleep with lenses you get stagnation of the tears underneath the lens (as you're not blinking), bacteria and toxins can build up and therefore the risk of potentially-blinding infection is around 10X higher than in other lenses. You definitely should not ever swim with them in as there is a really horrible waterborne microbe that can devastate the eye and is very difficult to treat.

As a PP said, they're fine for occasional overnight, but I wouldn't sleep in lenses.

Incidentally the type of lenses used for ortho-k are considerably safer to sleep in as they are gas permeable, as they're small you don't get the same tear film stagnation as you do with soft ones.
