Baking question - buttercream icing

Baking cakes with DC for a cake sale at school.

Bought ready made Betty crocker buttercream, coloured it ready for decorating.

Will they keep until tomorrow afternoon? Should the buttercream be refrigerated? Will it melt all over cakes if not eaten immediately?

In the fridge huni. X

Buttercream is fine at room temp as long as it’s not too warm.

Jamhandprints · 19/05/2019 14:28

It will be fine. Don't put them in the fridge, the cakes will go stale. Buttercream won't melt...maybe on a really hot summer day but not usually.

Thanks. So maybe put the bowls of buttercream in fridge overnight, do the decorating in the morning and hope they're ok for the day tomorrow at school stored at room temperature in the classroom.

No, put the bowls of buttercream somewhere cool and use them. It’s a nightmare to use straight from the fridge.

PurpleDaisies · 19/05/2019 14:31

Think about cakes you see in supermarkets and cafes.

Buttercream is not kept in chilled cabinets.

PowerdresslikeDianeLockhart · 19/05/2019 14:33

Ok thanks.

There is so much sugar in buttercream that it does not need refrigerated. As PurpleDaisies says, just stick it somewhere cool and it’ll be easy to use in the morning.

I rather fear that's what my DC have in mind. I've been trying to manage expectations!!

Nearly £25 on shopping to raise a lot less than than.

DC have lost interest and headed to the garden. I'm currently cursing the PTA.

The Betty Crocker stuff is dairy free, isn't it?

Either way, it doesn't need refridgerating.

fizzicles · 19/05/2019 15:17

Also absolutely fine to decorate now for eating tomorrow.

PowerdresslikeDianeLockhart · 19/05/2019 15:23

Great. That would be easier than tomorrow morning.

Unshriven I've got a dairy intolerance and am fine with Betty crocker. It does say may contain milk but they have to put it on the label if milk is used in the same factory.
