Thomas Cook, will they survive.

Now Thomas Cook are in a mess. I was stuck in the Monarch mess last time, it was not fun, coach transfers, waited at the airport for 14 hours for a flight home. Are foreign holidays going to be a thing of the past? I was also stuck in Gran Canaria for days when the volcano dust hit flights.

Eeek, are Thomas Cook and Tui connected? I'm flying on a Tui flight to Mexico soon but it's a first choice package. So hope they survive!

BarbaraofSevillle · 18/05/2019 15:52

I think TC and Tui are separate companies. bad luck OP with Monarch and the volcano OP. I've heard that the survival of the company depends on the sale of their airline division or something, so it's not looking good.

We were also due to fly with Monarch when they went bust but l was fortunate to quickly book flights with another airline within minutes of the announcement and then got all the money back from the credit card.

But I don't think it's the end of foreign holidays, maybe just their package model as many other airlines are still profitable but we now just book it all ourselves on the Internet, although the package arm of Jet2 seems to be very successful.

AnnaMagnani · 18/05/2019 15:57

We've always booked our holidays as separate bits online and been told by some people we don't have the protection of a package.

Well, yes but on other occasions it works out. I don't think there is one right way to book a holiday.

Runwayqueen · 18/05/2019 16:04

TUI and TCX are different companies completely. TCX have been in and out of trouble for so long. The airport I work at has still got one TCX flight left but operated on a smaller Flybe aircraft. It would be a huge shame to see TCX disappear completely, but I'm not sure how they can turn this around.

ihatethecold · 18/05/2019 16:09

Since Thomas Cook behaved so despicably when those young children died in Corfu I would never consider booking with them.
I wouldn't be sad to see a company like this disappear.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 18/05/2019 16:45

We are going on holiday and used thomas cook

Flights booked with virgin through thomas cook

Hotel booked through thomas cook....i think

So how would that work? Anyone any idea?

Longdistance · 18/05/2019 16:46

I think they punch above their weight for how much they ask for their holidays. Bloody expensive for how much they charge. Their service is pretty bog standard and below par.

NoSauce · 18/05/2019 16:47

What about the people employed by them? What about their jobs?

mollysshadow · 18/05/2019 16:51

Many of their holidays can be done for less online.

BlueThursday · 18/05/2019 17:36

For me, the tide turned when they showed their appalling attitude after the death of the young children from CO poisoning

StealthPolarBear · 18/05/2019 17:38

TUI used to be Thomsons I think

Longdistance · 18/05/2019 17:41

Yes, TUI was Thomson.

nrpmum · 18/05/2019 17:41

Not feeling stressed about this, not at all, only supposed to be going on our honeymoon in two weeks with them 😥

SherlockSays · 18/05/2019 17:47

I've worked for TC for 10+ years, leaving recently.

They'll be absolutely fine. Most travel companies (And airlines even more so) aren't in good financial shape, it's just that TC get the brunt of the media.

I worked there when the shares were 10p each and they came out of that fine.

All TC holidays are ATOL protected so cover and repartition would be provided.

I'm about to book Florida with them for 2020 and not worried at all.

NicoAndTheNiners · 18/05/2019 17:48

Ah, I knew Tui used to be something else.

nrpmum · 18/05/2019 17:55

@SherlockSays you've made me feel better about the situation, thank you

My mother always referred to them as Thomas Crook! Years ago they fucked up a holiday for me resulting in no holiday for me and massive stress fighting for compensation.

Staff on the shop floor were lovely, it was the company policy and management that were dire.

justasking111 · 18/05/2019 19:03

We flew on a Friday back on Monday with Monarch, when we finally got a flight home had to wait hours at an airport, saw two men at the gate who were British foreign office staff, they had been flown in on the Friday and knew the news would be out over the weekend so were there to look after British customers. I was hopping mad that the government had known about the crash but not said anything. It was a special wedding anniversary which was totally spoilt because we had to keep checking in with the UK news to see what was going on. My DIL had to have an emergency c section we found out just before we flew I would rather have stayed in the UK to support her because my DS was on a ship off Africa so would be en route for 48 hours.

Going into a travel agent is a weird concept now. DH wanted to do it for our first holiday together (his first time abroad), he also wanted to go to the dire welcome meeting where they push you to pay over the odds for excursions, luckily he was put off after that.
