Anyone with experience of cough variant asthma

DS was diagnosed late last year. Put on two inhalers and all was fine. There are odd days where he coughs a lot but next day no coughing.

Since Tuesday last week he’s been coughing and grunting from when he wakes to when he sleeps. Inhalers are making little difference.

Obviously we will go back to the dr but I wonder if anyone has more experience of this asthma than we do that can offer any help?

Thanks. DS is getting very little rest from it at the moment.

Emergency appt , sounds like he should be seen asap.

Ds had his doseage of inhaler doubled and it sorted it out.

Seriously, don't need around with asthma, it can do from irritating to needing urgent help very fast. Ring 111 at the very least.

As above, he needs seeing urgently. Might be hayfever or a cold exacerbating his asthma. They'll be able to settle him back again.

DS had it as a child (I never knew asthma could present as a cough), but has pretty much grown out of it now he's almost an adult. Only freezing cold weather affects him.

Grunting needs to be seen ASAP.

I got bollocked by HCP for letting ds have disturbed sleep for too long,I had no idea. I'm on it like a car bonnet these days.

I have asthma that presents as a persistent cough. If his inhalers aren’t working he needs to see a doctor ASAP - I would phone for some advice. If my inhalers don’t stop my cough, I usually need nebulised and sometimes steroids.

I second what LoafofSellotape said, we has asthma/breathing problems with DS as a toddler - it can seriously affect oxygen levels.

It could be hay-fever related/allergies related but tbh if breathing is affected (especially if he's breathing so hard he's sucking in under his ribs) you need a&e asap

On hold to nhs 24 now. Thanks everyone.

My dd would cough and cough with little relief from inhalers. Montelukast tablets, started at the onset of symptoms/a cold (always a major trigger), made a huge difference.

Crossposted with PPs - sorry slow typing.

Hope you're sorted soon Thanks

justasking111 · 18/05/2019 15:18

hope this is sorted. I start on anti histamines in March, my friend takes them all the year around now. Pollen can make it worse. Glad you are getting seen.

floraloctopus · 18/05/2019 15:18

Hope he's ok OP. Singulair aka montelukast make a difference here to with the occasional dose of steroid tablets.

QueenMabby · 18/05/2019 15:53

My dd has cough variant asthma. She takes Seretide (the purple inhaler) and this has been enough to keep it well under control. However last year when the pollen count was high her hayfever really aggravated her asthma and she was coughing almost constantly. She also had montelukast and it was a triumph. She took it for 2x28 days and it sorted her out in just a few days. I hope your DS is better soon.
